Interesting discussion of real politic
Revisado: 02-25-23
One thing to consider regarding military aid to Ukraine is that the US is able to get rid of old ammunition and military equipment AND pursue political goals. This stuff has to be replaced anyway. The M1A1 tanks will be replaced with the Abrams X a much more capable tank. Using the old stuff in Ukraine will also benefit the military industrial complex since we will have to BUY the new equipment as replacements as well as fresh ammunition to replace and UPGRADE our own capabilities.

How can we be proud of a system of justice that often pressures the innocent to plead guilty? How can we claim that justice is equal when we imprison thousands of poor Black men for relatively modest crimes but rarely prosecute rich white executives who commit crimes having far greater impact? Federal Judge Jed S. Rakoff, a leading authority on white-collar crime, explores these and other puzzles in Why the Innocent Plead Guilty and the Guilty Go Free, a startling account of our broken legal system.

Shocking critique of the deteriorating system of justice
Revisado: 12-30-22
Absolutely outrageous how the “system” has evolved into an administrative kangaroo system that only favors the well connected and wealthy…. Also shocking is the way administrative law takes away the option of the courts from the average American. But this explains the waves of violence that is likely fueled by frustration at the inherent unfairness of the system that has developed. Why do so called crazies shoot up workplaces? It’s their only recourse in a system that is set against them and those interests. Unless this is changed, we can expect more of this frustration to boil over in the future. Judge Rakoff offers some proposals to move in a better direction but it will ultimately take the voters to push change through election of legislators that have the interests of their constituents in mind!

Stephanie Grisham rose from being a junior press wrangler on the Trump campaign in 2016 to assuming top positions in the administration as White House press secretary and communications director, while at the same time acting as First Lady Melania Trump’s communications director and eventually chief of staff. Few members of the Trump inner circle served longer or were as close to the first family as Stephanie Grisham, and few had her unique insight into the turbulent four years of the administration, especially the personalities behind the headlines.

Fair and Honest
Revisado: 10-16-21
I am a life long democrat and NOT a Trump fan. Grisham offers a fair and honest accounting of her time in the WH. Her experiences track with several other books detailing others tenure. She is not salacious in her prose and offers the food and bad. She explained Lindsey Graham! “Senator Freeloader!” Apparently after losing the 2016 primaries, Graham decided to join ‘em and enjoy free golf, lodging, food and drink at Bedminster and Mar a Largo. Makes sense. Explains his embrace of Trumpism to a T. Well written and performed.

Historia
The American public's introduction to nuclear technology was manifested in destruction and death. With Hiroshima and the Cold War still ringing in our ears, our perception of all things nuclear is seen through the lens of weapons development. Nuclear power is full of mind-bending theories, deep secrets, and the misdirection of public consciousness - some deliberate, some accidental. The result of this fixation on bombs and fallout is that the development of a non-polluting, renewable energy source stands frozen in time.

Rational and reasonable. Great history. Wanting for Chemistry Though
Revisado: 07-05-21
Overall this is a very well put together book on the history of nuclear science. Being a stickler for chemistry though…..uranium tetra fluoride or UF4 is GREEN salt, not yellow cake which is U3O8. UF4 is an intermediate for production of uranium metal. The author gets this description of the fuel cycle wrong. Also, piping in the K25 Diffusion Plant is NOT pure nickel. It is steel with nickel plating. Nickel and aluminum are resistant to fluoride attack. The K25 plant was capable of enriching natural assay U-235 to 97% and all assays in between. The Paducah and Portsmouth GDPs worked in tandem enriching natural to 3-4.5% at Paducah then up to 93% at Portsmouth. Both plants ceased operation and are now being decommissioned. The US no longer has the domestic capability (e.g. US origin technology) to enrich uranium.
Aside from the chemistry, the author does a very good job with the nuclear science part. He also gauges public reaction to all things nuclear accurately. I would add that the State of Nevada LOBBIED HEAVILY to have Yucca Mtn considered as a nuclear waste repository only to withdraw support when it came time to accept waste. Nevada accepted billions of dollars in taxpayer money to develop Yucca then flipped. Also of note, Nye County where the site is located is pro-Yucca. It’s Vegas and Reno which are over 100 miles from the site that are opposed.

Here to rescue the reputations of our Founding Fathers from the plague of modern political correctness is The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers. Author and Professor Brion McClanahan shows how patriots like Franklin, Madison, and Hamilton laid the foundations of American civil liberty and had a better understanding of the problems facing us today than our current Congress.

Author perverts US History
Revisado: 06-11-21
The author perverts a rational view of history toward the far right. He romances the agrarian based, states rights view of the Constitution and its authorities as though it would work in more modern times. The author leaves out any discussion of how the world has evolved since 1789 as a rational basis for why we have expanded the general welfare clause to permit federal investments in such common conveniences as the interstate highway system, a transcontinental railroad or major seaports that serve the entire nation. He offers that these improvements only benefit the states in which they occupy. If that is the case, then does not Tennessee benefit from the port of Norfolk? Kansas from interstate highways? The author's literal version of the Constitution was applied from 1789 until the War of 1812 when a Nation was born. The war exposed the utility of federally funded infrastructure improvements became obvious as a requirement for the common defense as well as commerce. No discussion or argument has been offered as to where the U.S. would be without an expansionist view of the Constitution. I would offer that U.S., if it could have continued to exist as a country as the author seems to prefer, would be a global backwater, balkanized by multiple European and Asian interests.
The author also romanticizes home schooling as a superior means of education and cites that Jefferson graduated from college before age 18. Well, what were the educational standards of the day? What accreditation did the College of William and Mary possess at that time? For the TIME, these were stellar institutions and they have evolved with the times. Today Jefferson could never hope to graduate from such an institution as such an age. There is simply too much to learn for a baccalaureate.
The "Books they don't want you to read," list as is common with the "Politically Incorrect" series regularly cite writers like Ron Paul and Thomas Wood who then in turn cite this author in their books. This provides for a circular, unacademic ramble among a group of like minded individuals. Casual readers of history are cautioned. Much context is left out and common arguments that would run counter to the author's view are not cited.

When Kentucky blueblood Drew Thornton parachuted to his death in September 1985 - carrying thousands in cash and 150 pounds of cocaine - the gruesome end of his startling life blew open a scandal that reached to the most secret circles of the US government. The story of Thornton and “The Company” he served, and the lone heroic fight of State Policeman Ralph Ross against an international web of corruption, is one of the most portentous tales of the 20th century.

I had my doubts about this one. It seemed like it would be a dud but I gave it a go anyway. Great story and well written organized and performed. The fact that is true is wild. Interesting insights into KY justice, political and police systems. Connections to the Iran Contra affair and other interesting international intrigues are cited and others foreshowed. Very informative and entertaining. Learn the real truth about KFC and how Col Sanders got fleeced by John Y Brown.

I’m am a left of center Democrat, but after this book, I would love to spend an afternoon and a six pack with Boehner. Seems like a good guy. Rational. Smart. Incisive. I actually like the guy now. Great insights from his first days as a representative to his leaving. New perspectives on Clinton and Obama. And not good ones, but rational and very believable. John. Revisado: 05-24-21
For as long as this book is, you can get the message in about an hour of listening if not less. Nothing new here. Know who you are dealing with. Don’t attack. Be sympathetic. Seek common ground. Etc etc. This strategy is repeated over and over and over and over and over….get the picture? After a while it becomes annoying.

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still required reading in some high school and college classrooms. But its polemic rewriting of American history as a story of oppression is an agenda-driven fairy tale that has no place in academia. In Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar debunks Howard Zinn’s lies and traces the damage his mega-bestseller has done to American education, culture, and politics.

Over and over the author comments on Zinn’s poor scholarship, academic dishonesty, violation of the American Historical Association’s standards of research and publication…… after the first hour or so, you can confidently put the book aside because that is all the novel content you are going to get. No question that Zinn is one of the premier apologists of American history, but can the author offer a rational as to the reason?
