I needed to understand
Revisado: 12-30-24
I have no personal knowledge of the experience (horror) of refugees. This book provided a glimmer of insight into what so many people across the world face every day, week, month and year. It’s easy to paint all Muslims with the brush of “terrorist”when in fact the majority are also victims. A lovely book of friendship and determination.

Fun story of brave women
Revisado: 07-11-24
This story book stayed true to its theme. These two women were resourceful and strong. They didn’t need men to rescue them and there were no gratuitous sex scenes. The code of the pirate world was fascinating.

From the legendary actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film...and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

The rich details of movie making were incredible. I felt like I was there from the tiniest detail to the final scene. Of course this was fiction but I could feel the realness of what movie making is all about. It started slow but ultimately I couldn’t stop listening.

I couldn’t stop listening! Only Coben can pack so much action and intrigue into just a few days time. The performance is very well done across all the voices.

Due to a last minute stroke of luck, the three of them are able to escape formation and hide in the woods for days.

Amazing story of survival
Revisado: 12-30-22
I didn’t know this was based on the real lives of three sisters. The concentration camp accounts are more in-depth than in any book I’ve read. The will to live was simply incredible. I’ll be thinking about this book for a very long time.

I really liked this book. I love Paris and appreciated the descriptions of Montmartre, the parks and bistros. The story captured me immediately and the plot twists were clever.

Informative for a Cuba “novice” but weak narration
Revisado: 08-25-21
I learned about the Cuba of old and the Cuba of today. The plot line was believable but not terribly attention grabbing. That might have been due to the narrators. I had no idea there were two as all voices sounded exactly alike. It was easy to get lost between all characters, men and women, alike. The narration was slow, monotone and without emotion.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Suspenseful, twisted and great!
Revisado: 10-15-19
I’ve been looking for a book that would really grab me and keep me in my car long after I arrived at my destination. This is the book. I listened for 2 hours today and postponed the last 40 minutes because I just didn’t want it to end. The story is very good and the performance is amazing. This book definitely plays mind games with you. I recommend it.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Revisado: 07-09-17
There are many books that are great reads. This book is a great listen as Senator Franken adds much color through his humor and intonation. I was surprised at how much I learned about how Washington works. The Senator's personal stories and experiences kept it interesting and entertaining. This book made me happy, angry and inspired.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Good premise that got bogged down with Science
Revisado: 08-21-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The Martian was a challenging listen due to the mass amounts of science, physics, technology, etc. that the author felt he had to explain. Had I been reading the book, I would have skimmed/skipped large chunks of it. I finished it because I had much empathy for the main character who was literally MacGyver on steroids. There was enough "technical" information to make the story plausible as well.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I was worried about the ending for a long time. I was pleased that it ended the way it did.
Have you listened to any of R. C. Bray’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not that I know of.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes! It would be a very good movie - the script would need to highlight Mark's humor and drollness. Sort of like the Castaway except on Mars and everyone knows where he is - a very cool premise.
Any additional comments?
Not sure who I would recommend this book to. There is a lot to wade through but the characters are strong and likeable.
