I’ll read this book instead—the narration sounds like a bad radio drama that, annoyingly, keeps pulling me out of the story.

Croix Provence basically yells at you—not only that, but her emphasis is in all the wrong places and her accents are painful. I was constantly pulled out of the story making it not only an arduous read, but impossible to connect with the characters and the basic story line.
I may read the book instead of listening—but most likely not, my interest has dwindled…UNLIKE the headache I have after listening to Shouty McShouty pants narrate this book.

I started this series out of order and read the second (Daisies and Devotion) first. I’m glad I did because I’m not sure I would have read it had I started with this one.
The blurb leads you to believe this book, Promises and Primroses is just about Julia and Peter. Nope. There is a significant portion—from first person narrative—telling the story of Amelia and Elliot (Julia’s mother and Peter’s uncle). Amelia spends 85% of the book as a narrow-minded harpy, determined to control her daughter and prevent her future happiness with Peter because of a 30 year-old disappointment with Elliot…even though Amelia went on to marry Julia’s father and had a full and loving relationship with him. According to Amelia, the past doesn’t affect her at all; she is justified in her prejudice because she loves her daughter and only… (pause for dramatic eye roll) wants the best for her.
I vacillated between not finishing or, looking forward to her comeuppance, which when it came was only some what satisfying because she just flips and like The Grinch, Amelia’s “heart grew three sizes that day”, prompting her to plead forgiveness to all in a rushed ending where everyone lives HEA…minus Whoville and the roast-beast.
The amount of time you spend in Amelia’s head massively distracts from the “main” characters. It cheapens the love Peter and Julia find because there is NO development of it.
So…I think I am just disappointed because of what might have been. I love “proper romances” because, with sex not included, the authors spend their time and talent on the romance—making it believable and, in my opinion, happy-sigh worthy. That is delivered and done well in the second book of the series, and sadly what is lacking in the first.

I have no problem with character flaws—in fact they make for interesting characters. Danny is difficult to like from the beginning and only gets worse. She is self righteous—so much so—it was difficult to read because my eyes kept rolling. It was a chore to finish the book because I came to not care if Danny succeeded or not. I found myself cheering for moments when she was brought down.
The idea of the story was good. The writing was good. There was a little to much magic to fix plot holes for me. This book is YA

Keri Arthur is one of my favorite authors. My only complaint is a tendency for doormat heroines. This series is the worst of the lot in that sense. MMC was a a#% through the entire book. I just wanted FMC to grow a spine!!
Story was interesting and the narration was good. I would recommend it in spite of my misgivings.

I loved it! Delightful read! Will be looking for more by Sarah Eden. Justine Eyre’s performance was spot on, as usual.

Plot is predictable, but good. I had a difficult time liking MC.
I felt like the story was forced into the Regency time period. In my opinion, it would have fit better in the Victorian era.
I would have liked it more if I had read instead of listened to it. Narrator sounded like Moaning Myrtle. She made the females sound insipid and juvenile with high wispy voices.

So I read the first three books (Reagan and Darius’ story) and one book into Penny and Emery’s story. I then became tired of the same jokes and recycled scenes. I picked up this book thinking I’d give the series another try because this story sounded intriguing—and it was for the most part. A bit too much teenage angst bringing on bouts of eye rolling for me.

Having said that, for what it was, the story is pretty good...up until the end.
I think it can be a tricky balance when an author brings characters in from previous books. Do they add to the main story or detract? In this instant the MC became a secondary character. I felt like K.F. Breene—for whatever reason slapped together the ending, tying off loose ends with characters from earlier books. It’s like Reagan had to come onto the scene to validate Charity’s roll as the lynch pin of the universe. Instead of developing Charity’s character in a way that supports that responsibility.

The narration was ok, again up until the end. Nicole Poole goes WAY OTT when Reagan shows up in the last chapter. Nicole Poole’s ridiculous inflection replaced,in my mind, the actual story with visions of Reagan sliding in on her knees while yelling, “the fuuun has arrrrived!!”, complete with finger guns and winks.
The other issue I had with the narration is one that is true for every book Nicole Poole has narrated. She talks so fast at times that she stumbles over some of her words.

K.F. Breene seems to be dragging out this series—and while I don’t condemn the capitalist spirit, I do think it should be worth paying for.

The MC turns into a wiffle waffling wet blanket—her personality is so altered from the first book. 70% of this book is spent in her head ruminating the same issue over..and over...and over.
The “plot” is more of a footnote. The conflict between Dante and Jaf, figuring out their relationship could be handled in 5 minutes of conversation. Instead they go round and round. She whines...he responds with the same answer. Rinse and repeat.
It’s a shame there are so few action scenes. Those there are, are very well written.
The narration gets annoying when she is trying to convey sarcasm. Her accents are pretty good and she did a good job portraying a whining MC—perhaps too good. I just can’t take on the next book.
