Historia
It is 1938 and the final days of the British Empire. In a bungalow high up in the green hills above the plains of Ceylon, under a vast blue sky, live the Ferguson family: Bella, a precocious eight-year-old; her father Henry—owner of Pitlochry, a tea plantation—and her mother Virginia. The story centres around the Pavilion in the Clouds, set in the idyllic grounds carved out of the wilderness. But all is not as serene as it seems. Bella is suspicious of her governess, Miss White’s intentions.

Slow start, but couldn’t stop listening!
Revisado: 04-11-25
This author has written several different types of books that have pulled me in. Sometimes, it has taken me a while and some perseverence to get to know the characters enough that the story begins to intrigue me. It is his understanding and being able to portray human nature that makes his stories so interesting. Also, there is usually an unexpected twist by the end. He creates an atmosphere in which there are unanswered questions. It’s not at all a sit on the edge of your seat or nail biting thriller. It’s calm and well paced and just gently simmers along but you don’t want it to stop. I really really enjoyed this book!

It was a day like any other day for Marina Trahan…until she caught her husband in bed with another woman. Before that eye-opening wake-up call, Marina would have described her life as average or uneventful, maybe even boring. But now, chaos and confusion reign supreme.

I gave this book a try because I love the Miss Fortune series by this author. It took me a little while to get into this book. It was important to get to know the characters before the actual story could be launched into by the author. I'm so glad I stuck with it. It turned out to be a fascinating story and I have never read another one like it! It is charming and happy. Great quirky characters.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

hearing Harry tell his story with such calm truth
Revisado: 10-30-24
loved hearing the personal story told by Harry. the outrageous things that he is still going through with his family are a major wake up call. I hope, through the release of this book, that his family is able to learn to change their relationship with the press and that the press is held responsible for the things they have done.

And the second is a baby elephant. As his search for clues takes him across the teeming city of Mumbai, from its grand high rises to its sprawling slums and deep into its murky underworld, Chopra begins to suspect that there may be a great deal more to both his last case and his new ward than he thought.

Both charming and exciting!
Revisado: 09-03-24
This story starts off kind of slow. But you have to get to know the characters to appreciate what happens as the plot develops. I don't want to give anything away. But believe me that inspector Chopra is worth knowing and so is Baby Ganesh. I almost stopped listening at a couple of different points because I was so upset that what was happening would turn out badly. I don't know how the author managed it, but here is a story about fighting crime that is charming and thrilling at the same time. Really enjoyable. And the narrator does a great job. The Indian names and locations and culture were very interesting.

Historia
After losing her husband, Rosie Lee could have become one of Singapore's "tai tai," an idle rich lady. Instead she is building a culinary empire from her restaurant, Aunty Lee's Delights, where spicy Singaporean meals are graciously served to locals and tourists alike. But when a body is found in one of Singapore's tourist havens and one of her guests fails to show at a dinner party, Aunty Lee knows that the two events are likely connected.

Unexpected ending!
Revisado: 08-15-24
I enjoyed this cozy mystery even though there was a main storyline that could be problematic for some readers. Nonetheless, Aunty Lee's advice about judging people only on the basis of their character was well-taken as I read (or listened). Aunty Lee is a woman "of certain age and even more certain girth." She'a a very comforting character but also very shrewd. It was a good story. My only complaint is that the narrator would narrate in a soft voice but then turn up her volume as she voiced the characters (which she did very well, by the way). I had to keep adjusting the volume up and down so I could hear properly or not have my headphones blown out. All said, I would recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers. I will probably read more books in the series.
Note: I googled Sentosa Beach history and indeed, It was called a very similar name to that used in the book. Other aspects of the book contained historically correct information. I don't want to spoil your experience with any more specific info.

It's a good mystery BUT-
Revisado: 07-29-24
The criminal behavior that occurs is deeply disturbing. The story ends in a cliffhanger sort of situation where, if you want to find out more, you have to read the next book (I suppose). I didn't like the lack of resolution. I will not read any more of these. The subject matter is to unsettling for my tastes. It's not a cozy murder mystery at all. I made a mistake in thinking it was.
