Historia
What if every time you had a self-critical thought, you heard it in a man’s voice? The truth is not far off. Living in a patriarchy, women absorb a lifetime of messages that say your worth is defined by your looks, your accomplishments, and how well you take care of everyone around you. In fact, these messages are so pervasive that, even knowing they exist, they still manage to program themselves into our brains. The result is that women end up feeling anxious, guilty, and vaguely ashamed of themselves no matter how much they do for others or achieve for themselves.

100/10, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Revisado: 06-06-24
I’ve been listening to Kara Loewentheil’s podcast for years, so I knew this book would be good, but WOW! It’s a concise compilation of all her teachings in one handy place. I don’t know how she put so many concepts into such a short space of time and STILL made it so easy to follow - sorcery!
She explains why our thoughts are unhelpful, how they got there in the first place, and then provides practical, step-by-step ways to change them. Not only does she teach ground breaking concepts, she backs everything up with science, unpacks the big picture impact of socialization, and ties in smaller, everyday, relatable examples. Even though I’ve been following and practicing this work for years, she still dropped little mind blowing nuggets of wisdom that made this sooo worth the listen.
I love her no-nonsense, common sense approach and how she still explains things in a way that’s easy to receive. I am forever grateful for the tools she teachers and know this work has the power to change the world. It certainly has changed mine.

Interesting, Different, Great Characters
Revisado: 10-21-23
I love this book and would read it again! The characters are beautifully flawed. In some ways, they’re extremely ordinary, and others, so unique, which makes them relatable and interesting. I love that each chapter is written from a different character’s perspective. All the personalities are so different from each other and they have depth. Some of the storyline seems far-fetched, but somehow still believable. Definitely recommend.

So Ugly, but Wonderfully Told
Revisado: 06-09-23
There were parts of this book that were hard to listen to. Through the fist half, I was hoping the book wouldn’t head in the direction it did and the second half, I didn’t know what to root for. It stirred up a lot of emotions and left me thinking for weeks.
The characters are so painfully flawed, but despite all the bad, I couldn’t help but want better lives for them. The characters are so well written that you can understand why they make the choices they do, even if you don’t like them.
If nothing else, this book is wildly different from anything I’ve ever heard and unforgettable. This author is definitely a new favorite of mine.
The narrator did a great job, but I wish there had been multiple narrators for the different perspectives.

Great for Will fans!
Revisado: 06-09-23
I enjoyed the way he tells his story, the good and the bad. I learned a lot about him as well as lessons for my own life. His way of telling the story is entertaining - funny, heartfelt, honest. I felt like I was reminiscing, laughing, and crying with him.
I wish he would have talked more about his marriage, but liked that he let us in to so much of his childhood.
However, if I wasn’t already a fan of Will Smith, I don’t think I would have cared to listen.

Who am I? I've forgotten the answer to that question long ago. Ever since I ran from that house, so desperate to escape, I left with only the clothes on my back and socks on my feet. After that day, I've only ever walked in stolen shoes.

Lots of sex, storyline fell flat
Revisado: 06-09-23
I suppose it wasn’t bad since I did listen to the whole thing, but I wouldn’t listen again. The characters lacked depth. I couldn’t understand why they felt/thought the way they did. There was a lot of mystery in the middle and the ending felt rushed, but maybe that’s just the style of suspense? I guess I would have preferred more character development and/or details about the plot. About half of the book is good-girl sex with a hateful/angry man. I would have enjoyed the steamy scenes more if the characters were likable.
