Historia
In the fall of 1863, the Union army is in control of the Mississippi river. Much of Louisiana, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is occupied. The Confederate army is in disarray, corrupt structures are falling apart, and enslaved men and women are beginning to glimpse freedom. When Hannah Laveau, a formerly enslaved woman working on the Lufkin plantation, is accused of murder, she goes on the run with Florence Milton, an abolitionist schoolteacher, dodging the local constable and the slavecatchers that prowl the bayous.

Pointless
Revisado: 02-21-24
Long time admirer, reader and listener of Mr Burke's creativity. I'm not one to put down a book...always finish, lest I miss some critical twist. I finished this, epilogue, acknowledgments and all, and yet, I am still not sure - let me rephrase that - I have no idea of what the point of the story was (was there one?). I heard JLB state his opinion that this was his best work. I cannot agree with his self-assessment. Respectfully,

Historia
Max Rupert has left his position as a Minneapolis homicide detective to live in solitude. Mourning the tragic death of his wife, he's also racked by guilt—he alone knows what happened to her killer. But then the former local sheriff, Lyle Voight, arrives with a desperate plea: Lyle’s daughter Sandy and his six-year-old grandson Pip have disappeared. Lyle’s certain Sandy's ex-husband Reed is behind it, but the new sheriff is refusing to investigate. When Max reluctantly looks into their disappearance, he too becomes convinced something has gone very wrong.

Max Rupert needs to retire - again - and stay so
Revisado: 07-12-23
The story is a bit far fetched. Two ex-cell mates (Bud and Reed) conspire to kill the women that they see as evil: one's mother and the other's ex-wife. Except they swap which one is going to kill who. Bud wants mommy's money- cliche, but ok. He has Reed kill her for him. In return, Bud kills Reed's ex-wife. For what? To get his son away from his ex. Except, he clearly doesn't love the child. He is a very low form of life and easily the most vile character in the book.
I trudged along with the bad performance just to see how ludicrous this would get. Self- loathing, hermit, recluse, Max signs up - reluctantly - to help retired sheriff (Lyle) track abductors and rescue his grandson. Max's self flagellation gets tiresome and his self-righteousness is disgusting. Current sheriff encumbered by a dark past with one of the abductors refuses to intervene or follow leads presented to him by Max and Lyle. The redeeming character is Max's ex-partner from his days as Homicide Detective. The reader was so-so, but he did what he could with a mediocre novel.
I guess this is Max's redemption novel and although I would prefer he retire - permanently - I suspect Mr. Eskens plans on bringing him back into Society's fold to resume his "brilliant" detective trajectory. Ughhh!

Some clarification to lingering questions from The Passenger, but yet, another story. The Mathematics and Physics were way above my fund of knowledge: relevant or irrelevant? I don't know. But, the performers are so good, you feel like you are in the room with them and you can hitch your wagon along and enjoy the ride

Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

I think of myself as educated but a lot of this was over my head. And yet, the characters and the dialogue were riveting. I could not stop listening. I would have liked to know more about "the passenger", but perhaps that's all he was: a transient to introduce us to the main character. wow!

Leon Uris retums to the land of his acclaimed best-seller Exodus for an epic story of hate and love, vengeance and forgiveness. The Middle East is the powerful setting for this sweeping tale of a land where revenge is sacred and hatred noble. Where an Arab ruler tries to save his people from destruction but cannot save them from themselves. When violence spreads like a plague across the lands of Palestine - this is the time of The Haj.
