I had pretty high hopes for this based on all the good reviews it got. One comment that stuck in my head was "she presents the facts and let's you decide". That is not what is in this book. The author does a good job of repeating tales told to her in a respectful way free of judgment, but it's what she does AFTER that that's problamatic.

She throws out endless streams of assumptions that unproven and almost certainly impossible things as facts and then builds from their. She strings out good strings of "if this is true then this is true and this is likely", but the issue is a lot of the things she is staying as true or likely aren't. Its a string of facts that if even one fact is untrue it collapses and often most of their "facts" are just unproven nonsense.

A good example was the people she said might be head transplant patients, three teenagers with reported faces of old men. She talks about a man who has claimed to be preparing to do a head transplant as proof that head transplants are possible. First, he has not even tried the surgery and is a well known con artist. That aside, the procedure has not even been tried, much less succeeded yet. But she uses the assumption that it's possible as a jumping off point then presents as self-evident fact that any old person getting a head transplant would of course put it on as young a body as possible. She then throws out "fact" after fact that "must" be true, All of them based on previous "facts" and all of which would be untrue if even one of the previous "facts" weren't true.

The humor was filthy and I loved it. I ended up listening to the whole thing in pretty much one sitting.

This was a really good listen. They reader matched the content really well and the story was well paced and inspirational. If your a fan of Carol this is a great purchase. If your a fan of stories and personal growth this is a great purchase.

The only "negative" I feel is worth mentioning isn't really even a negative. If your looking for superhero stuff this ISN'T for you. This is just Carol going through military training and is only a story about her as an awesome, but totally mortal woman. This is in no way a bad thing, but I think some people might be disappointed if they went in with false expectations.

Also, it isn't a tie in to the movie. It is definitely heavily inspired by it, but there are a lot of little things that make it clear it's its own story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The reading was pretty good except one thing: The voice he did for Angela was AWFUL. It was grating, annoying, and REALLY didn't seem to fit the character at all.

Would you listen to Worldwar: In the Balance again? Why?

Yeah, it was a pretty good listen. There was so much going on (like in all of Turtledove's books) that on second or third listen's you'll pick up on stuff you missed (or didn't find important because it's foreshadowing).

Any additional comments?

For those not familiar with Turtledove and how he writes the stories will be told through the eyes of 10-20 different characters on all sides. In print edition the narrative changes every few pages and this is made clear by either the chapter ending or there being a much longer space than normal between paragraphs. In other audiobooks of Turtledoves (the southern victory series) there was a few second gap between switches in narratives, nothing too long but obviously much longer than the normal pause between reading paragraphs. That DOES NOT take place in this audiobook. If anything when there is a SHORTER than normal pause when narratives switch, making it sound like the previous sentence has been carried on without pause.

This was a tad confusing until I got used to it and I imagine it would have been even more confusing and hard to follow had I not been familiar with his form of writing.

Great listen, but not "true" history.

First I want to say this book is a great read (or listen). I give it 5 stars because it REALLY is enjoyable. The thing is, a lot of the stuff in here time has shown not to be true. I think it's very important going into this book knowing that them Priory has been proven to be a hoax, and on top of the the person(s) that purported that never meant to imply that he (they) were decedents of Jesus.

There are a lot of real facts and history in this book, but it ends up incredibly mixed with personal opinion and flawed leaps of logic. Even with all of that in mind, I still can't bring myself to call this book "fiction", I believe the authors wrote in sincerely and at the time of writing believed what they wrote. I think the best way to deal with this book is read it, enjoy it, and take the points that interest you and read other books about the subjects, perhaps ones that are more historically accurate.
