Brilliant writing. Brilliant acting.
Revisado: 08-01-21
A rare time when I feel compelled to write a review before I’ve even completed the listen. The writing was descriptive in beautiful, subtle ways, painting a picture of images infused with the intense emotion from the actors. I could close my eyes and see the men, visualize their faces, their anger, anguish, everything. Relationships were built through careful articulation, using few words but strong emotion to express much larger messages. It’s something I’ll listen to again, when I need to slow down and get grounded.

I rarely write reviews, but the narration...
Revisado: 07-26-21
Neil Shah was absolutely outstanding. It’s rare to find a narrator that can truly convey the emotion of the moment, and his heartache and despair was internal battle was so authentic and painful. The story itself was a little bit predictable, especially if you study human behavior at all, but was an interesting dystopian concept.

He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. This collection includes "Love of Life", "A Day's Lodging", "The White Man's Way", "The Story of Keesh", "The Unexpected", "Brown Wolf", "The Sun-Dog Trail", and "Negore, the Coward".

Dark, ironic, poignant, insightful, and even heartbreaking, Jack London’s short stories are as powerful as his novels. I can’t pick a favorite, it’s impossible. This collection is something I could listen to again and again and still be entertained every time. The narration by Robertson Dean is perfect, as if I’m listening to the author himself.

I can’t believe I’ve never read this before
Revisado: 02-17-21
I turn 39 tomorrow and up until this week, had never read White Fang. I’ve listened to a couple other Jack London audiobooks recently and love his prose, so started White Fang without even knowing what it was about. In this story, I felt like London was writing the way I think, his point of view and narration and insight and character development and how I truly understood the web he was weaving into the personalities of even the smallest creatures and characters.
And then there is John Lee. I have never listened to an audiobook more perfectly matched in every way than his performance of White Fang. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a story that came to life so vividly, not only because of London’s words, but also because of Lee’s voice, his intonations, his perfect pace and timbre, and everything about him. Just incredible.
I now have a new addition to my all time favorite book list. I can’t wait to listen again.

Not as surprising as I expected
Revisado: 02-09-21
Every review I read prior to reading this book raves about the twist, the climax, the end, but it was not at all a surprise for me. The foreshadowing gave it away. I also greatly disliked the narrator for Gray, she just didn’t seem authentic, her acting felt too contrived.

Historia
This wasn’t the plan. Judge Herman Calvert, 88, never thought he’d outlive his beloved wife, Marie. Yet now he finds himself alone, a grieving widower, desperate for escape from the home they built together, where every turn brings a painful reminder of his late wife. So the judge retreats to his lake cabin in rural Wisconsin, a place where an old man can find peace and solitude. A place where nature can take its course. But something new has moved in.

Not where I expected it to go, but wonderful
Revisado: 09-10-20
Fantastic listen, both for the story and the narration. Kevin Bacon slips seamlessly between well versed story teller and cranky old man that brought visions of my own grandfather, outlived by the love of his life and his second wife, both taken too soon, one from cancer, and one like the Judge’s beloved wife, unexpectedly and sudden. I pictured my grandfather as the Judge and smiled all throughout. The story itself edged on horror at the climax, not where I expected but at the same time, I had a vague idea of where it was going. A monster in a story about an elderly man dealing with grief is an odd but well written twist. Thank you, David and Kevin, for a wonderful listen!

All the tears
Revisado: 09-08-20
Had me in tears from start to finish, but not bad or sad tears. Well, not all of them. At times a bit predictable and cliché, the story is still original and heartfelt. The narration was absolutely excellent. Great job to all.

Unexpectedly Delightful
Revisado: 09-06-20
I rarely write book reviews. I rarely read them, either. But this book was worth the review. The stories themselves lean towards the macabre with almost predictable twists and humorously quaint endings. It’s not really my style, but it was a short listen and I’m trying to expand my library a bit.
The narrators, however, are the reason I am writing this review. Even when the stories turned me off, the performers kept me drawn in, with such energy, making the characters so much more vibrant, the situations visibly unfolding in my mind. I have new favorites to follow and listen to, even if the material isn’t my usual. Thank you to these talented men and woman for the evening entertainment!

A little one dimensional but overall good
Revisado: 09-14-15
I liked it. That's the simplest review I can give. It was a bit one dimensional and there was a lot (I mean a LOT) of deus ex machina to fill in gaps in the storyline. Once I got comfortable with the idea that, hey, they are living in virtual reality and anything can happen so just go with it, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The last third of the story had me very engaged, and at the start of the final battle, I had goosebumps of anticipation from head to toe. All I could think, over and over, is "this is going to be phenomenal on the big screen."
It was a quick, relatively easy listen, minus a few words that I'm sure re narrator mispronounced, and I definitely recommend it for anyone needing a light read without a lot of depth. Read it for fun!
