Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Better to read, too much mansplaining to listen
Revisado: 11-24-23
This is an overview of research on trauma, adversity, and the impact on the autonomic nervous system and most of this has already been summarized and published. Maté is a generally melancholic person and I really did not enjoy listening to his son mansplain.

Historia
Karen Johnson's fast-paced professional life came to an abrupt halt when she lost her 27-year-old son to a heroin overdose. Rather than grieve in a way that made people around her comfortable, she did the unexpected. She retired, sold her house and all her household goods, and went on a two-and-a-half-year journey that took her all over the world, finding a spiritual practice along the way.

Historia
During her multi-book investigation into understanding human nature, Gretchen Rubin realized that by asking the seemingly dry question “How do I respond to expectations?” we gain explosive self-knowledge. She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behavior, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively.

Couldn't finish this, just not compelling
Revisado: 01-05-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book was too redundant and the 4-tendencies are based on a poorly assembled quiz. Maybe this book would motivate someone who otherwise has an unclear sense of purpose in life.
What could Gretchen Rubin have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Had someone else narrate it. Made it more concise.
How could the performance have been better?
Too pompous of a performance by the author-narrator.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Four Tendencies?
N/A
