I have read several books by this author and once again he delivers a thoughtful immersive experience. I learned a lot about undersea cables, their importance and their vulnerability. Our inability to really understand, to make sense of things is represented by Conway. First he fixes then he breaks. Why?
Plus the writing is fantastic!

I had never heard of this author before. I saw a reference to it in the NYT By The Book column. I am not going to ever forget this book and its definition of happiness!

Mandel’s world is eerie and definitely not bound by the present. A detail: the narrator of the 1917 section is the same narrator of barbara Tuchman’s history of WW I. That added to the haunting experience for me.
The details of the future are matter of fact background to the very compelling story.

I have not read anything like this before. The emergence of Abe Kuntzler is a fascinating response to a terrible event. Not a fun read but I dare you not to finish it.

Such a powerful evocation of both the present and past impact of racism in the Deep South.
The ghosts are like the characters from Lincoln in the Bardo, creatures with an unsettled death.
Boy! Parchman must have been hell on earth!

Michael Chabon has spent time with his very colorful grandfather and recounts what he learns. Crossing WW II, the holocaust, the space age and a stricken Jewish family he visits a lot of territory very skillfully. The grandfather is a character to remember.
I'll miss the people in the book.
Thanks Michael

What first you think will be a satire or story of Bolshevik danger becomes a full and rich story of a life in what falsely seems at the beginning a very limited world.

I can't say I enjoyed the book and often I was confused about who was speaking, but this interwoven tale is a powerful and sad depiction of the weight of family and community.

What did you love best about The Sellout?

The forbidden nature of the language and situations made it feel like eavesdropping on ways of expression I could NEVER use.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was not the thing here. It was stream of consciousness once the scenes were set up that made it so entertaining and disturbing. I listened while walking and several times found myself laughing out loud, NOT wanting to explain what I just heard to passersby.

Which scene was your favorite?

The African American Supreme Court Justice's reaction to the case before him at the beginning of the book.

Any additional comments?

As a white person there are many times I felt a little squeamish about laughing at what felt like insider humor.
