Historia
Anthony Fennell, an Irish journalist and playwright, is assigned to cover the underwater cables that carry the world’s information. The sum of human existence—words, images, transactions, memes, voices, viruses—travels through the tiny fiber-optic tubes. But sometimes the tubes break, at an unfathomable depth.

What was left out
Revisado: 05-04-25
I have read several books by this author and once again he delivers a thoughtful immersive experience. I learned a lot about undersea cables, their importance and their vulnerability. Our inability to really understand, to make sense of things is represented by Conway. First he fixes then he breaks. Why?
Plus the writing is fantastic!

Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Provocative and beautiful
Revisado: 04-30-22
Mandel’s world is eerie and definitely not bound by the present. A detail: the narrator of the 1917 section is the same narrator of barbara Tuchman’s history of WW I. That added to the haunting experience for me.
The details of the future are matter of fact background to the very compelling story.

Historia
1946: At the apogee of the American Century, the confidence inspired by victory in World War II has spawned a culture of suffocating conformity in thrall to the cult of masculine privilege. In the hardscrabble industrial city of Trenton, New Jersey, a woman made strong by wartime factory work kills her army veteran husband in a domestic brawl, disposes of his body, and assumes his identity. As Abe Kunstler, he secures a job in a wire rope factory, buys a car, and successfully woos Inez, an alcoholic dime dancer. He makes a home with her, but for Abe, this is not enough: to complete his transformation, he needs a son.

In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award-winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural 21st-century America. An intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle, Sing, Unburied, Sing journeys through Mississippi's past and present, examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power - and limitations - of family bonds.

Historia
Moonglow unfolds as the deathbed confession, made to his grandson, of a man the narrator refers to only as "my grandfather". It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and desire and ordinary love, of existential doubt and model rocketry, of the shining aspirations and demonic underpinnings of American technological accomplishment at midcentury, and, above all, of the destructive impact - and the creative power - of the keeping of secrets and the telling of lies.

Wonderful quasi truthful memoir
Revisado: 03-24-17
Michael Chabon has spent time with his very colorful grandfather and recounts what he learns. Crossing WW II, the holocaust, the space age and a stricken Jewish family he visits a lot of territory very skillfully. The grandfather is a character to remember.
I'll miss the people in the book.
Thanks Michael

Historia
In the aftermath of Ireland's financial collapse, dangerous tensions surface in an Irish town. As violence flares, the characters face a battle between public persona and inner desires. Through a chorus of unique voices, each struggling to tell their own kind of truth, a single authentic tale unfolds. The Spinning Heart speaks for contemporary Ireland like no other novel. Wry, vulnerable, all-too human, it captures the language and spirit of rural Ireland and with uncanny perception articulates the words and thoughts of a generation.

Historia
A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant.

Provocative and FUNNY satire of race in America
Revisado: 10-14-16
What did you love best about The Sellout?
The forbidden nature of the language and situations made it feel like eavesdropping on ways of expression I could NEVER use.
What did you like best about this story?
The story was not the thing here. It was stream of consciousness once the scenes were set up that made it so entertaining and disturbing. I listened while walking and several times found myself laughing out loud, NOT wanting to explain what I just heard to passersby.
Which scene was your favorite?
The African American Supreme Court Justice's reaction to the case before him at the beginning of the book.
Any additional comments?
As a white person there are many times I felt a little squeamish about laughing at what felt like insider humor.
