Historia
Few U.S. presidents have captured the imagination of the American people as has Harry S. Truman. In this new biography, Robert H. Ferrell, widely regarded as an authority on the 33rd president, challenges the popular characterization of Truman as a man who rarely sought the offices he received, revealing instead a man who - with modesty, commitment to service, and basic honesty - moved with method and system toward the presidency.

Detailed, deep, thorough and for non buffs, the Sahara Desert. I liked it. The narrator’s mispronunciation of several geographical sites was annoying, especially USMC Base Quantico that came out as something oddly strange for such a well known place.

Historia
Summoned to relieve destroyers that are bogged down by escort duty in the escalating Pacific Theater, the Hayward is met with a rather cold reception. In the eyes of Pacific Fleet sailors, North Atlantic convoy duty pales in comparison to the bloody, carrier-sinking battles of Savo Island and Guadalcanal. However, Atlantic Fleet ships have had to specialize in one thing: anti-submarine warfare. The Hayward is sent off into remote South Pacific operating areas with orders to find and destroy Japanese submarines—but with little expectation of success.

Typical PT. Gets a bit slow at the end.
Revisado: 10-14-22
I have read (listened) to most of Mr Deutermann’s novels and have enjoyed all of them. The continual snarl of the CO became a little tedious as did the reader’s interpretation of the snarl but this notwithstanding the book is a good read.

He's the butt of political jokes, frequently subjected to ridicule, and almost never absent a "Worst Presidents" list where he most often ends up at the bottom. Historians have labeled him the "Worst President Ever," "Dead Last," "Unfit," and "Incompetent," to name but a few. Many contemporaries were equally cruel. H. L. Mencken called him a "nitwit." To Alice Roosevelt Longworth, he was a "slob."

A view, if decidedly different, of President Harding
Revisado: 10-03-22
I have read only two accounts of Harding’s presidency that are favorable, one being this book the other the short history written by John Dean. It seems that history revisionists need whipping boys, always Republicans (or their predecessors), to enhance the glory of their “ best” presidents. For example, Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades exponentially eclipse those of Harding’s but poor President Harding is judged far more harshly than President Clinton.

Historia
On the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki comes this heart-pounding account of the war-room drama inside the cabinets of the United States and Japan that led to Armageddon on August 6, 1945. Here are the secret strategy sessions, fierce debates, looming assassinations, and planned invasions that resulted in history’s first use of nuclear weapons in combat, and the ensuing chaotic days as the Japanese government struggled to respond to the reality of nuclear war.

A nice overview
Revisado: 08-29-21
Being a somewhat-more-than-casual historian of the Pacific War, I found this title to be a good listen but with no new revelations or insights. I might of missed it but no details on the influence of the Nagasaki bombing on the surrender debacle was, I thought, a little odd. Surely the second bomb had some impact on Japanese policy makers. Then again, I might of missed it. All in all, an enjoyable listen. The narrator was generally good but as with almost all narrations there were quite a few mispronunciations. Not enough to be aggravating but present nonetheless.
Who would enjoy this book? Anyone new to the Pacific Theater history and any knucklehead who has qualms about the usage of the bombs to bring about the end of the war. The author does a good job on this issue and provides plenty of stats on potential US (and Japanese) losses.

Historia
The career of the USS Wahoo in sinking Japanese ships in the farthest reaches of the Empire is legendary in submarine circles. Christened three months after Pearl Harbor, Wahoo was commanded by the astonishing Dudley W. "Mush" Morton, whose originality and daring new techniques led to results unprecedented in naval history; among them, successful "down the throat" barrage against an attacking Japanese destroyer, voracious surface-running gun attacks, and the sinking of a four-ship convoy in one day.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 08-19-21
It is truly sad to have the story of Admiral O’Kane, Mush Morton, the Tang and the Wahoo told is such a disinterested and monotonous fashion. I am reminded of several college professors who showed up to class with only their lips that, I think, moved from time to time.

The definitive work on Stalin's purges, The Great Terror was universally acclaimed when it first appeared in 1968. While the original volume had relied heavily on unofficial sources, later developments within the Soviet Union provided an avalanche of new material, which Conquest has mined to write this revised and updated edition of his classic work.

Only for the serious student of Russian history
Revisado: 07-15-21
This book is a giant obituary for the murder victims of Stalin. Page after page, "He was shot," "She was shot," drones on. Until the reader (listener) pauses and reflects that the victims were human beings whose lives were snuffed out by a madman and his henchmen.
The difficulty for some listeners may be the names of the victims that are difficult to keep straight unless the listener is a speaker of Russian.
The narrator delivers in a blase, almost monotonic, fashion that takes a bit of getting used to. Personally, I got used to it and enjoyed his reading of the horrific obituary that still, in my opinion, shapes modern Russia.
Bottom line: Should be required reading for anyone interested not only in Russian history but also in international politics.

Historia
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

Absolutely excellent
Revisado: 11-20-20
If, in your conversations, the morality and efficacy of dropping two atomic bombs on Japan to end WW2 should come up, simply refer those deluded hand wringers who cry, “What a tragedy that never should have occurred!” to this book. I say “this book” because those “shouldn’t have dropped the bombs” folks obviously never heard of Okinawa or Iwo Jima nor have they the vaguest notion of bushido and its implications for the defense of Japan. The book is
a marvelous overview of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki events with just about the right depth of information for any reader. Cannot say enough good things about this read/listen, including the wonderful narration by Mr Wallace.

In a lifetime shaped by politics, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proved himself a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America's shores, FDR found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes, his enemies his allies. To help wage democracy's first "total war", he turned to one of history's most remarkable triumvirates.

Revisado: 11-06-20
I have read bios of all the main characters in this book but to have them all interacting was really very interesting. I was pleased also that the author was often critical of FDR, a welcome change from the usual slavish adulation put upon this mere mortal. Anyway, for historian or dabbler this book is an absolute must.
