I really enjoyed this. The story was well written and covered the feelings and experiences of a variety of people in the aftermath of the Civil War. The narration was good, too, with the southern accents seeming natural and not overly done.

My first Klavan novel, and certainly not the last. I enjoyed the character and plot development, as well as the resolution. Brilliantly done!

Amateurish

I listened for free, but I wouldn’t have paid for this book. The writing was a bit amateurish—too many similes and an unrealistic storyline. The narration was the biggest problem, though. The female one was worse, but both had an annoying habit of putting emphasis, inflection, and pauses in the wrong places. For example, the character should have “waxed nostalgic now,” not “waxed, nostalgic now.”

Excellent and thought provoking

As the new VP-elect, he can no longer say graduating from law school is his coolest accomplishment. It fills me with pride and hope to know a kid who was raised like JD can still grow up to become America’s vice president. It’s a great story made more special because it was told in his own voice.

Spectacularly written, masterfully narrated. Kristen Hannah brings the Vietnam era to life for those of us who are too young to have felt the impact it had on the country, and the vets in particular. Thank you to all who served. You belong on America’s ‘wall of heroes’!

Another well-crafted story by Dervla McTiernan! It had good suspenseful moments, heartbreak and loss, and a good dose of redemption. The narration was well done, too.

I was almost put off by the negative reviews of this narrator. I’m glad I listened anyway. There was nothing in her narration that bothered me. The beginning of the story was a bit depressing because of the extreme amount of suffering, which I’m sure was not unrealistic to the time. It did become an enjoyable story, and I may revisit. this one again.

Sweet little romance

Lighthearted and sweet romance. I appreciate that Liz Maverick’s characters can meet and fall in love without any graphic descriptions of gratuitous sex. Nothing wrong with a little G-rated rom-com.

Amateur writing

The stories are decent, and I got my money’s worth out of the 3-book set for 1 credit. However, at times I was rolling my eyes at the writing. The writer uses the same descriptions over and over: stomachs roil, bile rises, feelings knot and pull tight. Then in each book the male and female lead characters (one white, one Indian) basically experience an instant attraction/love connection and spend the rest of the book having deep conversations with every glance. Listen, I’ve been married 20 years and my husband still doesn’t understand a word I say, out loud and in his own language, much less with my eyes. I hate to be overly critical, but I really found it kind of cheesy.
