Finished At Last!
Revisado: 09-02-24
I did manage to finish Invaders...barely. I've listened to worse books but I've also listened to many better stories. There might have been some character development, but if there was...I missed it. Not my first Heppner/Rummel listen but the first that seriously disappointed me. I won't bother with the rest of the series.

Historia
We've come a long way in the forty years since the Shongairi attacked Earth, killed half its people, and then were driven away by an alliance of humans with the other sentient bipeds who inhabit our planet. We took the technology they left behind, and rapidly built ourselves into a starfaring civilization. Because we haven't got a moment to lose. Because it's clear that there are even more powerful, more hostile aliens out there, and Earth needs allies. But it also transpires that the Shongairi expedition that nearly destroyed our home planet ... wasn't an official one.

Great story but I'm disappointed!
Revisado: 01-19-24
I was quite excited when I learned that book 3 was coming out and I immediately pre-ordered. While listening to it I began to realize that this story was going to turn into a long multi-multi book series. It became quite evident when long descriptions of useless details came up more and more often to the point where I was tempted to jump ahead. Let me say that a multi-book series can be enjoyable as long as it continues to contribute to the overall story arc and "To Challenge Heave" was fine in that department but my fear is that when several years pass by between releases and I'm about to turn 72 years of age, that I may never get to listen to the ending! As an "older" codger I wish that if an author wants to write a ongoing series that he/she announce in advance how many books will be released and over what time-span. But that's me.
*** Note to the author and Audible. The 11 and a half hour length is deceptive since nearly the last 1 and a half hours is simply several appendixes listing nothing but lists of definitions. Expected in a printed book but the audible version running time should be for the story! ***

Great Story...BUT...
Revisado: 07-14-22
I liked New Frontiers and as always I enjoy listening to Mark Boyett's narration. My one and only complaint is the same as I have with many of these multi-book stories. In later books I almost expect it but the first book in a series CANNOT end with a major war about to start...that's just wrong and pisses me off!
For me...a Book 1 in a series should be reasonably complete. When a first installment ends abruptly at a high point it leads me to believe that future books will do the same. At 70 years of age I like to at least feel that I'm going to be around long enough to hear the actual end of a story.
New Frontiers is promoted as a Trilogy, so I have to assume there will certainly be a conclusion to the story in Book 3 so I may eventually listen to the rest of the series...if I'm still around.
I remain hopeful that some authors will once again start writing quality sci-fi STAND ALONE books and not rely on endless serial "cash cow" stories that seem to never end. Even a great story can get boring!

I'm Losing My Patience
Revisado: 04-20-20
I'm wondering if the previous reviewers are relatives of Mr Forbes. Yes book 2 does continue from where book 1 left off but that's the only connection I see to book 1. A 6 hour audio book and 4 and a half into it as I write this review and so far very little of what I've heard actually adds to the story in book 1. So far just a series of scenes that are overly drawn out to create "fill". I'm getting the impression that the author is hoping this will turn out the be a cash cow series that he can stretch out.
I really hate being so negative since after the disappointing cliffhanger ending of book 1 I really expected the follow up book to be something I could feel good about...not the case. I'd love to see the return of "stand alone" books or maybe even a trilogy once in awhile but so many authors now are writing never ending stories filled with endless dribble just to fill time with just enough "story" to hopefully sell the next book.
On the bright side Jeffrey Kafer's narration is stellar as usual and is the only reason I'm going to finish the book. I seriously doubt that I'll blow another credit on a book 3.

My First Rule Was Broken
Revisado: 03-19-20
I did enjoy this book...however...I have a personal rule that the author should not assume a successful series in the first installment. To start a series and leave the first book in a cliff hanger should never happen. This is a personal opinion of mine but the first book in any series should be, for the most part, standalone. Then let the reader decide if it would be worth continuing with future installments. I may...or may not purchase book 2.
As for Jeffrey Kafer's narration...he always gets 5 stars from me.

The Author Must Have Lots of Friends
Revisado: 07-20-19
I was extremely disappointed with this series and can honestly say that the only reason I did listen to all of it was the narrator. Without Mark Boyett I would not have gotten beyond book 1. The series was far too depressing and full of illogical decisions. The scale of the overall story was all wrong. It was supposed to be a galactic war but I never once got any sense of that kind of scale. Technology came far too easily...as in..."we need this to do that"..."OK, I'll need a few hours." (Not actual quotes from the story...but you get the idea). Found myself skipping though many of the scenes especially those dealing with the politics. I'm sorry but I can't find it in myself to say anything positive about the overall story. I think my biggest beef would be if you have a super ship large enough to have a civilian city IN THE SHIP with a population of tens of thousands...how could it EVER run low on or run out of missile weaponry??? I don't recall anywhere in the story where we are told the actual size of the ship. That's my 2 cents!!!

The Other Reviewers Are Correct
Revisado: 05-30-18
I really do like space opera with fleet engagements...BUT...when the engagement takes up 95% of the book then that's a bit too much! As other reviews make clear this book adds nothing to the overall series and is just another action. An action that goes on and on and on for the entire book. After a couple of hours it just gets boring! I have to recommend that this book be skipped...save your credit and hope that Mr Currie gets his mojo back in future books.

Revisado: 05-27-18
I've periodically been searching for Dragon's Egg in audio format for several years. Having read the paper version many years ago I wanted to re-enjoy this book again but paper reading is a thing of the past for me. Thank You Audible for this addition to your listings. Dragon's Egg is one of...if not THE...most original Sci-Fi stories ever published and at no point does it ever disappoint. For anyone who has not read it and is looking for a GREAT STORY...look no further! Now we start a new wait for "Starquake".

A huge dissappointment
Revisado: 11-02-17
Overall I do enjoy Larson's works but Alpha Fleet is an exception. I can't state why that is without spoilers. I will say that with most stories I have no problem adapting the mind set that allows all the amazing things that tech and abilities let the characters achieve. Something that certainly turns me off is outright silliness and illogical behavior (even for the universe the story is set in). Also too much repetition of said silliness. KEEP EVENTS PLAUSIBLE! Alpha fleet may have turned me off to the series. However Mark Boyett's narration was perfect as always.

The epic and highly anticipated conclusion to the listener-favorite series that had countless Audible listeners (and employees) hooked from the very first Bob - featuring, as always, a flawless performance from the inimitable Ray Porter. Being a sentient spaceship really should be more fun. But after spreading out through space for almost a century, Bob and his clones just can't stay out of trouble. A Great Ride
Revisado: 08-12-17
Would you consider the audio edition of All These Worlds to be better than the print version?
Can't say since I've never read the print version...but the audio version is great!
What was one of the most memorable moments of All These Worlds?
The conclusion!!! A story with a a definite finish and no "loose strings". I'm getting tired of so many series going on and on and on to just become a "cash cow" for the author with stories that just get diluted and eventually start to get boring. The Bobiverse story was / is great and was wrapped up in a way that now Mr Taylor can consider a spin-off to another related story...hopefully to wrap up in no more 3 installments.
What does Ray Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
These were my first books read by Mr Porter...but they won't be the last.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's been too many years since I've been able to complete a book in a single sitting...but I think I would have liked to.
Any additional comments?
Another Bobiverse trilogy following the travels of original Bob is something I would enjoy.
