Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Tragic and Overly Dramatic
Revisado: 01-03-24
The story drags on and swings from maudlin to exaggerated giddiness the entire book. It targets the powerful, wealthy men who were able to manipulate, use and abuse the women who unfortunately loved them.
I am pleased to see more women getting the upper hand in such relationships, standing up for themselves and each other, but we are still a long way from equality between the sexes.
Men who act entitled, cruel and demeaning to women do not deserve to be celebrated - they deserve to be reviled as some of the worst examples of humanity, not mourned, lauded or ELECTED!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Historia
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared. She never saw Mercy again. Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate.

Adequate but not memorable

The title about says it all. Very slow story with an occasional worthwhile passage, but rather boring and pedantic.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Too long and repetitive
Revisado: 10-05-23
It is an informative book but the repetition of facts became more and more tiresome as the book ground on. I did struggle to finish it and often listened or read other books at the same time to keep from quitting entirely. I believe that I was only able to finish because of the exceptional skill of the reader, Scott Brick.

Way too long!
Revisado: 09-20-23
A mediocre story read well, but three times longer (perhaps four) than it needed to be, or should have been. The courtroom scenes were so poorly written that I thought the judge was going to lock up both attorneys for attempting to bore the jury to death!
Give this one a pass, you haven't missed anything.

Usual courtroom scenario...
Revisado: 08-20-23
This book was so mundane and unremarkable that I mistakenly downloaded it from my library not realizing I had already listened to it a few years ago. It took me a couple of chapters to realize I'd heard it and my review shows how I felt about it the last time!

Heartbreaking, well told story.
Revisado: 07-31-23
This book was well written, contained wonderful visual prose without being overly flowery, and is very true to the topic.
The narrator is excellent and the accent fairly well done - although not as "twangy" as I would expect for that area (where I grew up). An excellent listen!

A long story...
Revisado: 10-17-22
The story was overly long and unnecessarily ponderous... the author could have finished this story and been more true to its message without dragging the reader and the story down such a long, boring road.
