Don’t care about the characters
Revisado: 04-03-25
The author spends at least half the book on characters that have almost nothing to do with the main character. And he spends more than half the book failing over and over to make progress toward his goal. He’s supposed to live this woman but he acts like a teenager in trying to save her, wielding none of his supposed skills, just killing pointlessly. Not even worth finishing this book.

So wordy
Revisado: 01-29-25
Enjoyed this as a kid, but almost impossible to listen to as an adult. So wordy, so many dithering characters. So much telling rather than showing. Needed serious editing. Painful to wade through all the useless blathering. Jumped ahead constantly.

Ultimately, Boring
Revisado: 12-07-24
Continuous action, especially action that gets increasingly improbable, loses its impact and becomes tedious. Boring. Pointless. The language is good but there is no story, no plot, and ultimately no interest. A story needs ups and downs. The characters could be anyone. Nothing happens because of who they are.

Historia
Jordan McKell has a problem with authority. Unfortunately for him, the iron-fisted authority of the powerful Patthaaunutth controls virtually every aspect of galactic shipping. In order to survive, Jordan ekes out a living dabbling in interstellar smuggling for outlaw concerns that represent the last vestiges of free trade in the galaxy. So when Jordan and his partner, Ixil - an alien with two ferret-like "outhunters" linked to his neural system - are hired by a mysterious gentleman to fly a ship and its special cargo to Earth, they jump at the job.

Narrator shouting is never good
Revisado: 10-26-24
Hard to focus on the story when the narrator starts shouting his lines for anything remotely action or emotional. Not seeming to trust the writing to convey what’s happening, he blares the action at three times the volume of the normal narrative. Pops the story bubble and makes listening unpleasant.

Relentlessly depressing
Revisado: 07-27-23
Hearne has forgotten how to write an entertaining story. When an author runs out of good ideas, just start killing people off and because their isn’t actually a plot just keep killing people off as a way to give the impression that there’s a story.

Abysmal
Revisado: 06-01-23
Having lived in the high Arctic, this author didn’t bother to do his homework. And who wants to spend so much time in the head of a serial killer? Terrible book on so many levels.

Historia
Once, Jackson Rook was a war hero. Raised from boyhood to pilot an exosuit mech, he’d fought gallantly for the rebellion against the Collectivists. But that was a long time ago, on a world very far away. Now, Jackson Rook is a criminal, a smuggler on board the Multipurpose Supply Vehicle Tar Heel. His latest mission: steal a top-of-the-line mech called the Citadel and deliver it to the far-flung planet Swindle, a world so hostile even the air will kill you. The client: a man known only as the Warlord.

Standard tropes but OK…except
Revisado: 04-14-23
What made me stop listening and return the book was the villain POV. Who wants to be in the head of a psychopath and listen to their sadistic thoughts and planning? Not fun, and not even interesting. Sad that so many writers follow the path down the drain of writing in this way. Narrator was pretty good.

Frustrating
Revisado: 03-27-23
Wildly inconsistent pacing. 10% story and 90% world building/backstory/pointless side scenes where the plot dies and you have to fast forward sometimes by entire chapters to find a narrative thread. Also pretty grim and unpleasant in general. Could have been much better with a lot of ruthless editing.

Historia
Cole Riker is a Slip Runner. A contractor tasked with finding alien salvage in exchange for credits. For an ex-smuggler like Cole, there’s a catch: Don’t break the terms of parole. That means doing things by the book. Find salvage, turn it in, get paid. But everything changes when a retrieval mission lands him in a previously unknown sector. There, he finds the material he’s been sent to recover, along with something more. A brand-new form of ancient alien life.

Endless talking with zero action
Revisado: 02-25-23
Kept waiting for something to happen but the author keeps sending his character to one bar after another. Is a pool game or a strip club what passes for story theses days? On and on with insipid character thoughts. Gave up at chapter 8.
