Historia
One murdered, one missing. Both are almost identical. Detective Nik Pohl has seen every shade of darkness in his career. Not used to playing by the rules, he finds himself frozen out by his superiors. What’s worse, now he’s being blackmailed by a shadowy businessman into investigating a seemingly crimeless disappearance. A young woman, Viola, left her home months ago, leaving a letter to her parents saying she wouldn’t be coming back. With a little digging Nik discovers the case of an almost identical-looking woman, who went missing in similar circumstances.

Thrilling, action-packed listen
Revisado: 02-05-25
It took me a while to get into this because the main character is a bit rough and not super likeable. But once I got into it, it really moved fast and packed in a lot of twists and turns. The ending was a bit unfulfilling. I thought it was going in a different direction with the villain's motive... And some of the scenarios seemed - a bit of a stretch!

Historia
At the close of World War II, London is in ruins and Rose Daniel isn’t at peace. Eight years ago, her brother disappeared while fighting alongside Gypsy partisans in Spain. From his letters, Rose has just two clues to his whereabouts - his descriptions of the spectacular south slopes of the Sierra Nevada and his love for a woman who was carrying his child. In Spain, it has been eight years since Lola Aragon’s family was massacred. Eight years since she rescued a newborn girl from the arms of her dying mother and ran for her life.

Great characters, slow at times story
Revisado: 01-13-23
I liked the characters, but the story dragged in unnecessary parts that seemed like they could have been cut. and the Audible narrator had one cadence of speech that she used the entire book.

Short, sweet listen

This was a fun enough read, and I feel like I got a taste of Spain.
I like the narrator's voice, but he didn't change it at all for the different speakers.

Bit hard to follow
Revisado: 11-02-22
I listen to a lot of audiobooks and don't usually have much trouble. But I struggled with this one and thought there should have been more separation when they switched between narrators. It wasn't clear whose perspective we were following. Other than that, very graphic look at the Inquisition. Good prep for trip to Spain.

NOT a zombie book
Revisado: 10-30-21
I definitely misread the title and assumed this was the famous zombie story. It ended up being my cup of tea - a ghost story and murder mystery, but the ghosts are nice and so the book isn't at all creepy. The narrator's voice took time to grow on me. But overall it was a fun listen.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

Historia
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Slow start, slow to finish... Briefly interesting in the middle. Some interesting tidbits about history of Christmas, but too biographical about Dickens.

Historia
First published by H. G. Wells in 1898, The War of the Worlds is the granddaddy of all alien invasion stories. The novel begins ominously, as the lone voice of a narrator intones, "No one would have believed in the last years of the 19th century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's."

Boring
Revisado: 10-22-20
For a story about alien invasion, this book was so boring. There was very little dialogue and almost no character development, but predominantly description. This was nothing like the movie. I had a hard time connecting with and cheering for the main character or anyone because there was so much description.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and rushed through in just a few days. The characters felt so well developed. I loved the setting. The mystery kept me engaged in every chapter. The financial industry background was fascinating. The ending was thoroughly satisfying.

Kentucky version of Where the Crawdads Sing
Revisado: 09-11-20
I truly enjoyed this book. There were parts - particularly the sacrifices a mother makes for her baby - that made me cry. The performer did an excellent job with the variety of accents, ages and characters, who all felt truly distinct. I learned a lot about a region of the country I know next to nothing about, and I ADORED the friendships between the women.
The pacing did seem to drag in parts, and I was able to step away from it for a few days without missing it. I wonder if it might have benefited from some editing to tighten it up.
