I really enjoyed this latest outing in the Kate Dawson thriller series. I liked but wasn't all that crazy about several novels on the New York Times Best Seller list, so I sought out John Flynn's Terror at G-20, a Kate Dawson thriller. Unlike the NY Times' picks, Flynn's mystery thrillers are consistently good, often great, with outstanding characters, a credible plot, and action-adventure beyond compare. I listened to the retail sample, and decided that I'd download the last book in this series. This one more than lived up to my expectations. There were a couple of clues in the book I figured out before Inspector Dawson, but then discovered later how wrong I was. Then, when I was halfway through, I was pretty sure I had figured out the bulk of the mystery only to have the rug pulled out under my feet. And then, about three-quarters of the way through, I was certain I had figured out the main reason why the Asians girls had been brought to the United States, and again, I was wrong! So all of that is to say that there were a lot of twists and turns along the way, and I found I just could not put this book down until I got to the end, which featured several surprises. This book deserves 5-stars, and is a really good book. As an aside, I also want to say that I love it when an author as popular and successful as Flynn doesn't get complacent after he's made it big. He keeps working hard for his fans. Can't wait for the next book in this series!

Visions Audio Book Treat in my Christmas Stocking!

Revisado: 12-20-19

I've got to come clean with my husband: I peaked in my Christmas stocking, and found my favorite author's collection of short stories as an audio book. Well, I couldn't help myself! I played the audio book of Visions in Light and Shadow instead of playing Christmas songs I've heard a hundred times. John Flynn's short stories were simply incredible. Each one would have made an outstanding episode of Netflix's "Black Mirror." The first story had me in tears as Rupert explained the destruction of mankind from a killer asteroid strike, and then talked about how he, as a robot, has been so lonely. "Interfacing Rush," a tale about two homeless cyberjocks who are veterans of an earlier cyberwar struggling to live day to say, reminded me how lucky I am to have a husband and two kids and a roof over my head. "A Gift of Verse" was both chilling and sad as mob rule dictated the death of an enemy of the people, a poet, and how a little seven-year-old girl saw through the mob's hypocrisy. This was my favorite story of the bunch, but I can honestly say there wasn't a single stinker. Each story whether it was science fiction or fantasy or horror or mystery had something important to say, and did so with a lot of skill and the craft of a master writer at the top of his craft. A great book, and well worth my momentary lapse in judgement in unwrapping a Christmas present nearly a week before the holidays..

Outstanding Female Protagonist! Great Story!

Conventional wisdom holds that male writers just don't do female characters well. Best-selling authors, like David Baldacci, John Grisham, Ross MacDonald, even Ian Fleming, have tried, but failed miserably to write a female character well. They start with the premise the female character has to be six-feet tall and a bodybuilder; they give her a man's deep voice or make her a lesbian, or both, and turn her lose on unsuspecting male characters. Look what a belly-flop Baldacci made with his butch She-Hulk Atlee Pine. There's nothing the least bit sexy or feminine or female about her; for goodness sake, she even has a man's name, Atlee. With all that said, there are a few male writers out there who are producing great female characters. John Flynn is the only male author writing thrillers today who writes a well-developed and thoroughly believable female well. His Kate Dawson thrillers feature a very smart and strong character who gives as well as she gets. She's vain, overly confident, petty, loving, sexy, sensual, a real pain-in-the-ass who alienates many of the male characters she works with. Flynn describes her as an urban woman living on the edge who wears designer clothes with designer labels she has purchased at the local flea market. Her jacket may well be labeled Versace, but it was clearly bought at Walmart from the clearance bin. She is a woman full of contradictions, but that's actually part of her real charm. She's a tough-as-nails homicide inspector who is ready to put criminals behind bars, but when her neighbor/friend is served with a restraining order to stay away from a young woman he is harassing for sex, she is the first one to stand up for him in public and then in private scolds him for being such a misogynist. In Flynn's latest thriller, Murder on Air Force One, to become an audio book, Kate must investigate members of the First Family who are each suspected in the death of a Fox News Reporter. Dawson goes under cover as a masseuse to gain access to the First Man's suite, and discovers an amorous First Man (named Bill) who demands that she and he play more than "paddy-cake." She's sexy all right, but does not fall all over herself, like other women, to his obvious charms; she'd rather shove a gun in his face or beat a confession out of him than succumb and use her feminine wiles to get what she needs. Male writers would assume (wrongly!) that she'd give into his sexual advances when a real, living and breathing woman would find another way to accomplish her goal. Then, towards the end of an incredibly well-written and well-plotted thriller, Kate Dawson squares off with the female President, mano y mano, and stands her ground. She is not intimidated by yet another strong-willed woman, and knows that this is a fight to the death. You'd think a cat-fight would follow because most men love the idea of two women scratching each other's eyes out. But a writer who is really in touch with what a real woman would do, in a similar situation, proceeds to a battle of wits wherein the woman who wins is the smartest. Kate Dawson is incredibly well-written, and I just love the Kate Dawson thrillers. She's an outstanding female protagonist in a great story.

With little to watch on television, the night before Thanksgiving, my family and guests enjoyed a real Thanksgiving treat. I put on John Flynn's Architects of Armageddon while I prepped the meal for tomorrow. To my surprise, everyone gathered in the living room (and a few in the spillover dining room) to listen to the latest Kate Dawson thriller. The story held them spellbound, with excellent writing and imaginative characters. The story's theme about redemption and self-sacrifice reminded all of us why we were celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday. Old and young alike enjoyed the tale. Thanks Audible!

SF Responds to Climate Change!

Cool! A science fiction novel which is about climate change and the environment. I've read a couple of John Flynn's thrillers, and liked them very much. Check out my reviews. Up to this point, I knew he was a good writer, with great characters, highly suspense-filled plots, lots of action and romance. What I didn't know is that he has a real soul and conscience. The new audio book of The Jovian Dilemma has all of the hallmarks of Flynn's thrillers. After Protagonist Ryan takes control of a space station orbiting Jupiter to oversee a mining operation for a rare, much-needed resource back on Earth, several mysterious deaths occur and a deadly act of sabotage. He is catapulted into the role of police detective, and must get to the bottom of things in order to discharge his duties. So far, a predictable thriller, set on a space station. But then, Flynn introduces us to the Jovians, a species living in the gas giant. They are gentle, somewhat whimsical, and intelligent beings, but their lifestyle is threatened by the mining operation which is stripping away their home, in much the same way greedy, rich companies are stripping away Earth's environment and causing climate change. The parallels are truly frightening, but not in a preachy sort of way.. We should send this book to every politician in Washington D.C. I loved this book, and have recommended it to every member of my book club.

My family and I had just battened down our shudders in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian. We had a couple of long days and nights ahead of us. So I ordered a new mystery from Audible, and settled in for the long wait. Intimate Bondage turned out to be one incredible potboiler, one that every member of my family enjoyed. I had listened to Flynn's Merchants of Death already, so I knew him to be a very capable writer. What I wasn't prepared for was just how remarkable this story truly was! Even better than his first audio book. I loved it, and the time passed quickly, like Hurricane Dorian. I'll be reading more of Flynn's Kate Dawson mysteries in the future!

I have read each of the Kate Dawson thrillers, and loved all of them. No one weaves a better mystery than John Flynn. So, when the latest one became an audio book, I was curious how it would hold up. I am happy to report Merchants of Death, as narrated by Geoffrey Boyes, is exceptional. Boyes manages to bring each of the characters to life with his narrative skills. I loved listening to the book almost as much as I did reading it. Five stars for an exceptional audio book.
