Great story
Revisado: 03-07-23
I loved this story. It was sweet and engaging and creative. But the narrator’s voice was hard to listen to at times When she tried to change her voice to sound like other characters it got gravely and scratchy and, frankly, sounded really unhealthy. I preferred reading it so I got the whispersync version so I could go back and forth when I needed a break.

stuffy nose was so distracting
Revisado: 06-10-19
The narrator had a horribly plugged nose and, although the story itself was pretty good we really struggled to get past the stuffy nose. It made it hard to listen to. Cringeworthy!

What a fabulous performance
Revisado: 01-20-17
If I could give the performance 6stars I would. The characters are depicted so well. Lovely story. Heartfelt, very well written characters came alive even more with the readers' added nuances.

Ho ho ho! Here's what to listen to while driving to the mall, wrapping gifts, entertaining friends, or relaxing in front of a crackling holiday fire. In Scott Simon's modern version of the Christmas story, Jesus is born in an abandoned factory near Cleveland and the Three Wise Persons bring Chipotle gift cards. Claudia Sanchez gives a Latin accent to "A Visit from St. Nicholas". Barbara Bradley Hagerty explores what Christmas means for the boy choristers of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. (Hint: Handel).

Not what I expected
Revisado: 01-06-17
I was looking for more of a series of stories. There were a few of those. But there were also what seemed like human interest stories. The collection was a very broad assortment of tales and memories and essays. And one very strange "play" in 3 parts

Historia
Nicola Marter was born with a gift. When she touches an object, she sometimes glimpses those who have owned it before. When a woman arrives with a small wooden carving at the gallery Nicola works at, she can see the object’s history and knows that it was named after the Firebird - the mythical creature from an old Russian fable. Compelled to know more, Nicola follows a young girl named Anna who leads her into the past on a quest through the glittering backdrops of the Jacobites and Russian courts, unearthing a tale of love, courage, and redemption.

So good as a set
Revisado: 05-20-15
I've already read this story but had to read it again after reading the prequel "the Winter Sea". The second read was so much better with the context of the first story.
The narrator was okay. Having read it the first time and listened to it the second I had a harder time adjusting to a few of her quirks. In fact, because of those quirks I recognized her as the narrator of another series I've listened to: her royal spyness.
Overall it was a great piece of historical fiction. The love story was mostly clean. The characters believable as long as you can 'suspend reality' while you listen.

My daughter's favorite book
Revisado: 04-18-15
My daughter is 5 and doesn't usually have the attention to listen to a chapter book (other than this and the Wizard of Oz) but she asks for this one repeatedly. Something in the story has grabbed her imagination. She says, "it's fun and scary and funny at the same time." The scary parts aren't too scary and she likes that Nim helps the adults and the bad guys don't win. This is a great book. Not too simplistic because it grabbed my imagination, too.

Frustratingly inconsistent narration
Revisado: 01-24-15
I have been listening/reading this book with whisper sync and found than, although Raudman has a wonderful and charming natural reading voice, as soon as she tries to read a character 's voice I winced! Her attempt at various English accents were sadly unsuccessful and came off sounding a strange twist of Boston and Cockney. I found it much more satisfying to read the story which, on its own, was very sweet and innocent yet full of kid friendly action, surprises and language. This is definitely a book I plan to introduce to my own children when they are a bit older but I will either read it to them or find a better narration. It's really too bad because Raudman has such a pleasant "regular" voice with natural inflection and lilt. But all the adults sounded flat and mopey and the children's "accents" were just too distracting to really enjoy the story. That said, I would be interested in listening to her narrate an American work of fiction

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy. So, that was Matt. Who Julie Seagles likes. A lot. But there is also Finn. Who she flat out loves. Complicated? Awkward? Completely. But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother’s? This was all supposed to be temporary.

wonderful story! better read than listen, though
Revisado: 09-23-14
I LOVED this story and when I finished it last night I kept thinking of it long after I had turned out the lights. The characters are wonderfully lovable and flawed. I saw the plot twist coming half-way through but it didn't ruin the story at all. It was a light, clean romance.
I had purchased both the Kindle book and the accompanying audible book but I just couldn't listen to the reading. I couldn't stand the way she read the male characters. blech! It didn't sound like normal speech, but rather something affected and awkward.
So I would recommend the book for sure, just not the audible version.

Historia
Long before he starred on some of television’s most beloved and long-running series such as Taxi and Who’s the Boss? and went on to distinguish himself in a variety of film and stage roles, Tony Danza was a walking contradiction: an indifferent student who dreamed of being a teacher. Inspiring a classroom of students was an aspiration he put aside for decades until one day it seemed that the most meaningful thing he could do was give his dream a shot. What followed was a year spent teaching 10th-grade English at Northeast High - Philadelphia’s largest high school with 3,600 students....

A Fantastic Listen for anyone who believes in the
Revisado: 03-24-14
This book was well written, emotional and real. As a teacher, married to a teacher and from a family of teachers, I have a firm belief in the importance of this job and am saddened by the red tape and hoop-jumping of bureaucracy as well as the difficulty of reaching students on the fringe. This book captures both the feelings of the despair of failure and the hope of success that keeps us coming back everyday. Tony Danza's voice is the perfect delivery for this memoir, too. There is something about the thick Brooklyn accent and the gravely tone of his voice telling his own story that makes it so much more real and emotional. I have recommended this book to many of my teacher friends but I hope that non-teachers read it, too. The whole reason he started this was to bring change and hope to education in our country and the more people who read it and understand what goes into teaching, the more hope there is for change.
A fabulous listen!
