Audio messed up

No balance between narration and dialogue - I could either have the dialogue blasted in my ears, or struggle to understand the narration. Not sure this is a professional narrator…? Seems like he is just some guy. The sound mixing made it super hard to follow what was going on. I loved the first two, but struggled to get through this one since I had to rewind often just to figure out what was going on.

I’m struggling to understand how this novel sparked a bidding war

The author writes that the MC is smart, and that is basically the only way we know she is smart - because she acts rashly and thoughtlessly throughout the book. The story falls into deeply familiar romance book tropes, but with some explicit sex scenes that move this out of what I would consider YA territory. The author mistakes headstrong for strong, and convenient story inconsistencies as demonstrations of how she is special, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the MC if she were a real person. Nothing really new in this book, and the many stereotypes the author draws from aren’t woven together in any particularly clever way.

The first book was exciting and enticing. This continuation of the story had vignettes that should have had me in tears, but the narrator’s bizarre syncopation and old man delivery made sitting through this a chore. I recommend the printed version instead.

A hillbilly beach read

The breezy story and wish fulfillment remind me of romance novels more than anything. It’s like a man version of that. The MC calls himself a hillbilly frequently, hence my title. It’s fun and fizzy and don’t ask for anything deeper.

I'm a scientist, so maybe I'm too critical, but the narrator (who is otherwise decent) just cannot pronounce enough of the frequently used words correctly to keep me in the flow. Assay (ASS-A) is pronounced essAY; Guiterrez (the U makes the g hard, like guitar) (git-air-ez) is git-ee-air-ez, and his German would have done better in his native American accent instead of the half-whatever-he-is-doing. The science itself mixes some things up. For example, a viral delivery that is currently being injected now sporulates in the stomach for oral delivery, but sporulation is not a function that viruses can perform, as they don't have cells. No comments on the theory that if we could speed up evolution by 5,000 years we wouldn't have cancer any more, as though people haven't already been evolving hundreds of thousands of years without outpacing cancer - cancer evolves with us.

As for the characters, no one is very fleshed out. It's nice that he has a Latino MC, but nothing about him is different from the way Jack Reacher is written except for his flashbacks to mama have some "mijo"s thrown in there. The female love interest is of course stunning and damaged and labeled strong, even though she basically just goes along with what other people tell her. You can tell the author is a male who only understands at a surface level that women are also people.

I don't know, maybe I'm just a bad audience for near-future sci-fi. Maybe you will listen and like it.

Boring fantasy of a bro who can just do anything because of his sheer testosterone. If we are still allowed to use the word “airhead,” that is this MC.

This is just world stuff and logistics and not much humor. The Bobiverse is collapsing into itself and not fun any more.

Typical Scalzi - light, fun, interwoven parts that initially seem unrelated but end up coming together in a clever way.

Didn’t hold my attention. Couldn’t sympathize with the solipsistic and annoying MC. Villain was right that they were similar to each other.

Travis Baldree saves another one

Travis Baldree has this niche nailed down for good reason. He is one of a very few, with Nick Podahl, TGR, and (usually) Luke Daniels who can elevate the material.

This books suffers from being the second in the series. The first has Alex learning that he is a Chosen and escaping that fate, learning to thrive while undercover, dodging priests, and justifying leaving his homeland under siege from The Big Bad. This adventure is enhanced by world building and the introduction of The Friend Group.

The second book has Alex mostly settled into using the Fool's Mark to his advantage, and now he is just.... at school. It's all slice of life in this world, and honestly I zoned out during most of the battles because it's just not that exciting. The new mystery that the author is hanging over this book is mostly out of sight, and Alex shrugs off the few hints about the mess he left at home when he abandoned his sacred duty. I'm not going to continue with this series, which is too bad, because the first held so much promise.
