Historia
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

What a lovely look at being human & all it’s messiness, love, fear, anger, sadness, joy. And plant & animal life through the eyes of a fig tree. Beautiful!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Great story, hard to believe
Revisado: 12-24-23
This was hard to read sometimes, knowing this was & still is how women are treated in male dominated areas of expertise. I found some parts of it unbelievable & unlikely though I love the character & her daughter.

Historia
Patagonia's Cerro Torre, considered by many the most beautiful peak in the world, draws the finest and most devoted technical alpinists to its climbing challenges. But controversy has swirled around this ice-capped peak since Cesare Maestri claimed first ascent in 1959. Since then a debate has raged, with world-class climbers attempting to retrace his route but finding only contradictions. This chronicle of hubris, heroism, controversies, and epic journeys offers a glimpse into the human condition, and why some pursue extreme endeavors that at face value have no worth.

Loved this book, the history, the research. It was obvious a lot of research went into this book. It was so well written & conclusions did not feel jumped to. I appreciated getting all sides of the stories. So interesting & so we’ll written. I couldn’t put it down once I started.

Historia
On January 14, 2015, Tommy Caldwell, along with his partner, Kevin Jorgeson, summited what is widely regarded as the hardest climb in history - Yosemite’s nearly vertical 3,000-foot Dawn Wall, after 19 days on the route. This engrossing memoir chronicles the journey of a boy with a fanatical mountain-guide father who was determined to instill toughness in his son to a teen whose obsessive nature drove him to the top of the sport-climbing circuit.

I was laughing & in tears
Revisado: 12-24-23
I know a lot of this story but Tommy’s tenderness & quiet appreciation, motivation, energy kept me laughing & in tears throughout. I felt sometimes he spoke of my own feelings about Yosemite, El Cap, general appreciation of nature, and addiction, drive to reach a climbing goal (tho far from his level), keeping relatable. The words eloquent & personal. So glad he was able to do the Dawn Wall. What an incredible feat & so much learning in the process. Thanks for sharing your world Tommy.

Historia
Between 2016 and 2018, Elissa Bassist saw over twenty medical professionals for a variety of mysterious ailments. Bassist had what millions of American women had: pain that didn’t make sense to doctors, a body that didn’t make sense to science, a psyche that didn’t make sense to mankind. But then an acupuncturist suggested some of her physical pain could be caged fury finding expression, and that treating her voice would treat the problem. It did.
