I’m probably the only one who really disliked Ray Porters performance in Bobiverse (too whiny and petty) but I now understand it’s because of his talent at adapting to the content. It’s as if Jonathan Mayberry’s work was made for Ray Porter, the number of distinct voices, the depth of characters portrayed, and complexity of emotions conveyed is nothing short of extraordinary. The stories themselves would have been compelling as it is - finally a proper vampire story, I wish Ghost Road Blues was available on Audible! - but Ray’s performance takes it to another level.

A pairing of narrator and author to rival Jeremy Robinson and R C Bray, beginning Kagan the Damned right now. Brilliant.

SPOILER I get that it’s setting up for a sequel, but the simple fact is X would have made it if he hadn’t done the stupid hero thing. What really makes it annoying is that such lengths were taken to establish the woman he traded his life for, as by far the most incompetent character in the story, justifying it with some line about her being young, whilst ignoring the fact that Tim who is an actual child, will now grow up without a father, which is absolutely how Tim saw X. The ending was so beautifully tragic, it was such a shame to see it ruined by such nonsensical behaviour.

Overall a really fun tale, despite some repetitive phrases and that ruined ending.

Bray absolutely slayed it as always.

Will be interesting to see how they end up making so many books in a relatively small universe.

Just remember the term monkeys is a joke, we are APES, not monkeys

I know he eventually mentions we are brainless apes (you know who I’m talking about) but the term monkeys happens about 10 times a minute in parts, so like the title says, just remember it’s a term used as a derisive joke, we evolved from apes, not monkeys.

Now that pet hate is out of the way, I have lost best friends to war, either combat or PTSD. And I have learnt a lot irl and through novels like this about a type of brotherhood and belonging and sacrifice in armed services that is inspiring. But at the end of the day, war is old men sending young men off to die.

So to hear a novel where the frustrations and stupidity of the military industrial complex and corruption in capitalist society were not glossed over, was so refreshing. The facetious ironic Ooah was a brilliant touch that made me laugh. It does not ignore the courage and honour that the men and women in service deserve, just explores the reality of what comes with service.

The story itself is a bit slow to start, and there were some inconsistencies that editing should have picked up, lazy sentences compared to the attention to detail that defines almost all of the novel, but it was an excellent story and start to a series, and the meta view of how galactic war might play out, the rules of engagement in such a thing, were a really clever touch.

As usual R C Bray absolutely nails it and makes the slow start so easy to deal with. And once it gets going it’s a really fun ride.

One of the staple military sci fi series out there imo. With Bray narrating it, if you are into the genre this is a must listen. If you’re not, this would be an excellent place to start, especially if you’re keen for a narrative that isn’t disrespectful to the military but doesn’t glorify it like so many other action or sci fi action military stories.

What the title says, brilliant metaphor of being on the autism spectrum explored via a robot’s inability to handle human emotion and interactions. Looking forward to the next one, I hear it only gets better from here.

What the title says. Truly one of the greatest tales demonstrating our place as humans not apart from, but a part OF the biological world we are blessed to have evolved from. The folly of capitalist extraction, borrowing without returning, without ever preaching, was a beautiful thing to experience. If every kid had this as required reading in school, and understood the reality that this so called fiction detailed, our world would be a better place. Like Adrian Tchaikovsky, this author somehow explores all these themes with such detailed explanations of dangerous and exciting forms of life, at once at odds with yet essential to the animals we call humans, that it’s impossible to put down once you start reading. The giant’s dialogue becomes a bit draining at times, but that’s the only fault I could find. Do yourself a favour and go on this journey,!-!: take its lessons with you.

Pretty much what the title says. Other reviewers have covered the story and how refreshing it is not to have us starting with the birth of the world but a retired professional in it. So I’ll just say how refreshing it was to hear one of the most talented narrators, use his skill on a story that tbh, I wasn’t expecting to be nearly as professional and well developed. The kid character is a bit annoying, the ‘bad guys’ fairly predictable facing some standard OP encounters, but the way the class system relates to the planet itself, the way the world feels like it has a meaningful history shaping the characters in it, and the zen like practices of the MC, made this one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve listened to in a while. It’s no LOTR, but just a very enjoyable adventure. If you like Kramer’s narration check out Black Talon.

A remarkably refreshing take on the post apocalypse tale

So many stories either neglect the importance of, or lack the skill to articulate, the little details. Instead filling every sentence with “he said” “she said” ad nauseum.
I won’t lie, I love the over the top boombastic style of the Extinction Cycle, but for a grounded story that gradually unfolds and slowly sucks you in as it does so, with an actually believable story, this tale is without comparison. Narrating is done well and very easy to listen to, but nothing remarkable. The story does the lifting and the two together make this a must-read for anyone into apocalypse stories.

Enchantingly dark and twisted, a collection of truly adult fairy tales that speak at once of topics too dark for children and yet delivered in a manner the piques the curiosity I’ve only ever truly felt as a child.

A phenomenal read, that will delight fans of Grisha without spoiling anything for those who haven’t yet explored that wonderful world.

It’s easy to write off glowing reviews as hyperbole (I do it all the time) but I genuinely hope you get the chance to be carried away with these amazing tales, that demonstrate the breadth of both the author and narrators skill, moreso than any of the novels imho. To say so much in such few words - impressive and enthralling. End rant :)

Read ‘Plight of the Living Dead’ instead

Seriously. Way more informative and entertaining read with a much more engaging narrator.

All about real zombification in the animal kingdom. from wasp venom literally hijacking a cockroaches brain/neurophysiology, to larvae inside ladybugs causing them to involuntarily spasm and kick away predators as a result, to the infamous fungus that causes an ant to climb a tree above his colony before a spore explodes out of its head and infects the ants below.

It sounds gross but it is SO fascinating and a much more worthy investment of your time and credit. Which is a shame, because I normally love this authors work - def check it out after you’re done with ‘PlightOTLDead’.

Not sure the latest neg reviewers were actually listening

One negative reviewers gripe was that they are basically invincible and ‘don’t need to eat or sleep and ignore injuries’ which is patently not true - elixirs have comedowns, one MC fell asleep in a chair at his most vulnerable from exhaustion etc, in fact the limitations of their power and the loss of life around them are described in detail and form a major thread in this latest novel.

Yes the female character can get a bit whiney but she is *far* less annoying in this one as her complaints have actual power behind them (literally bowling another MC over) and are explored through a complex interplay between her previous ability to tap into a ‘icy’ state of calm and how losing this is a downside to new powers she gains.

It’s not going to be listed as a classic like LOTRings, but if you see the point of books (audio, print, digital) to escape or be entertained, in a world that doesn’t need its own thesaurus to enjoy, this is a fantastic adventure that’s so much fun to read.

Some of the negative reviews are so far off the mark, I wonder if they were only half listening in traffic or have the wrong book entirely.

Highly recommended.
