Historia
Angela Merkel has always been an outsider. A pastor’s daughter raised in Soviet-controlled East Germany, she spent her twenties working as a research chemist, entering politics only after the fall of the Berlin Wall. And yet within fifteen years, she had become chancellor of Germany and, before long, the unofficial leader of the West. In this “masterpiece of discernment and insight” (The New York Times Book Review), acclaimed biographer Kati Marton sets out to pierce the mystery of Merkel’s unlikely ascent.

Captivating
Revisado: 10-31-23
An excellent book, narrated in a most beautiful style (not the prologue and ending by the author) This is the fascinating journey of a remarkable women. Her journey provides insights into world leaders as well as the personal history that shaped her. I wish all leaders would have her brilliant mind and confidence. The world would be a much better place. Enjoy!

Save your money- it’s BAD
Revisado: 07-29-23
I was looking forward to book 2, but this is so disappointing, almost as if he let someone else write much of it. The book is a string of cliches with almost every paragraph, so cheesy, it gets old fast. Half of the “story” is flashbacks in dreams or thoughts to repeat events and conversations from City on Fire! How lazy can you get? And the narrator is bad, so bad it’s comical bc of the theatrics. It’s especially bad when a guy keeps raising his voice each time he responds as a female character. - I don’t know what went sideways, but this is not how Dan Winslow writes. Unless he had to meet a deadline and just cranked it out in a few days getting an assistant to write part of it. If the 3rd book is just as bad, I’ll be returning both.

Historia
Excel spends his days trying to seem like an unremarkable American teenager. When he’s not working at The Pie Who Loved Me (a spy-themed pizza shop) or passing the time with his girlfriend, Sab, (occasionally in one of their town’s 17 cemeteries), he carefully avoids the spotlight. But Excel knows that his family is far from normal. His mother, Maxima, was once a Filipina B-movie action star who now makes her living scamming men online. The old man they live with is not his grandfather, but Maxima’s lifelong martial-arts trainer.

When a simple minded teenager writes a book
Revisado: 09-08-22
I was disappointed bc the storyline had such potential. But when told by a bored, unambiguous teenager, it’s not just an annoying read, but there is no story. Until the last 2 chapters, the book is nihilistic - about nothing but his days doing the bare minimum. If you are into fleshed out characters and an interning story, save your credits. Also, the narrator is pretty bad imitating Asian voices.

As an adult, Lauren Hough has had many identities: an airman in the US Air Force, a cable guy, a bouncer at a gay club. As a child, however, she had none. Growing up as a member of the infamous cult The Children of God, Hough had her own self robbed from her. The cult took her all over the globe - to Germany, Japan, Texas, Chile - but it wasn't until she finally left for good that Lauren understood she could have a life beyond "The Family."

Deliberately Disgusting
Revisado: 06-04-22
She reads it with such contempt in her voice you start hating life. It’s not even what she talks about but how she milks it to be as vile and gross in the most monotonous way. Basically it’s a “middle finger” reading why her life sucks and that she doesn’t care - about anything. I won’t finish it since it’s garbage.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Ughh…Stop the RANT!
Revisado: 04-03-22
If you want depressing AND boring, repetitive negative thoughts from page one 'till the end: The main character whines through each chapter if she had been pretty, her parents, her husband, her children! FFS! would have liked her more. The whiny voice narrating and the story of the Dustbowl told through this woman’s life, are enough to want to throw a perfectly good phone out the window! I fast forwarded bc of all the praise this book got. But each time she encounters another difficulty, she repeats also all the old sadnesses over again. Just when you think the story will move on, she starts fresh with a list of how it could be worse, and goes into horrible detail! How much negative thinking does it take to ruminate to write all these sad and painful thoughts your mind can come up with, Kristin Hannah? There could have been a story, but this is just a bad read for anyone’s sanity. Reader, save your energy for something more balanced and with substance. This book is pure punishment to the senses!

Great Storytelling Beyond Politics
Revisado: 02-01-22
All the stories spanning over continents and generations, including that of a young woman who got injured beyond words by her infamous husband, all in the public spotlight, held my attention over the long span of this book. It’s a great one for a road trip!
A tip: I changed the speed of reading to 1.1 since she talks too slow. At x1.1 it becomes a normal read.

The Whining!
Revisado: 03-30-21
Tried way too hard to come up with an engaging story, but the sample audio is the most interesting part. The entire book is surface level, an amateur trying, but the characters have no life to them, their stories just rambled over and you feel like escaping someone’s droning who mentions irrelevant details to fill pages. I get why someone would think this book is popular bc it deals with issues that are relevant today. But it drags and whines and delves on an uninteresting inner life of what the author guesses his young daughters feel or felt growing up about anything from the dog to moving. I fast forwarded many times thinking I will get to the story. But there is none. The voice drones on and on and so does this book of nonstop self- pity. Ughh... it could have been interesting, but this book will leave you irritated if you aim to finish it. Save your money.

Save Your Money
Revisado: 12-22-20
What a drama queen! Both her reading and her presentation of her life are over the top disingenuous like a Kardashian. If you want to read how casually this self-proclaimed vegetarian describes eating live snails presented in flower stalls and shrimp that are alive while her elderly, steak-eating boyfriend thinks they are playing tennis on their plates, go for it. And her endless whining about how she can't decide whom she misses more at any one time, her ex-husband, her 68 yr old boyfriend or the 40 year old Dell whose child she's pregnant with but wants to raise with the old man...I kept skipping over the chapters until I decided that I can't listen to this spoiled woman's stories anymore and returned the book. Whew!

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

What a Whiny Guy
Revisado: 08-31-20
Story is ok, but Ronan Farrow narrates it cloaked in self-pity. Surprised by such an intelligent guy that he sounds like his mother, Mia Farrow, blaming everyone if they don't take him or what he uncovers at face value. He has to insert himself as a perpetual victim. Pretty depressing book and you need breaks from it.
