Sometimes a writer teaches you about the characters, and sometimes you feel the characters, and sometimes, you experience the characters. This story was an experience.

This is a good, old fashioned mystery/crime/thriller with a twist I didn’t see coming!

It’s a Christmas Miracle!

I just finished Sleeping in the Fire, a collection of short stories by John Durgin. In the prologue, he mentions that he didn’t like short stories before reading some of Stephen King’s and realizing that he could do whatever he wanted with a short story. It felt like this collection was his “Hell yeah, I’m doing this!” That enthusiasm shines through. John Durgin is one of those writers who really knows how to evoke a sensory experience. The stench of death, an unpleasant experience with your neighbor in the restroom, he can put you there. Each story in this collection had a bit of a theme, all were memorable and entertaining reads. They were still different enough that I didn’t feel like I was reading the same story over and again. My favorite involved a “Christmas miracle.”

John Durgin sat with both elbows on his desk, head resting in one hand and a pen in the other. He nibbled gently at the end of his pen, wondering to himself, “What would it be like if Stephen King and Michael McDowell had written a novel together?” Knowing this could never happen, Durgin muttered, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” Thus, Inside the Devil’s Nest was born. The story starts strong, portraying a man struggling with his own demons while trying to hold his family together. (With an annoyingly accurate depiction of teenage girl attitude.) The book then takes a turn into a train wreck of consequences for bad decisions and generational trauma that the reader can only follow to its conclusion. The narration was excellent, pleasant and expressive without being overly dramatic or annoying. A solid four stars on my personal scale of “I’m returning this” to “Actually Stephen King or Michael McDowell.”

Family folk horror, with an engaging “mystery” that nicely captures that “Uh oh!” Feeling one gets when you anger the ancient evil. Took me a while to get through the story, because I kept falling asleep. Not because the story wasn’t engaging, but because the narrator has such a soothing voice! The Scots accent definitely lends to the atmosphere of this tale!

I just finished the audiobook. I knew nothing going in, and was pleasantly surprised. The story was well written and managed to capture my attention right away. Some reviews have mentioned that this might be considered “YA”. Maybe if you consider The Traveling Vampire Show YA… What I can say is that there were a few parts that creeped me out. That’s not easy. Well done!

The “bad thing” in the story was a unique twist on the haunted house genre. Really enjoyed the story and even found it creepy at times.
