Creepy!
Revisado: 06-10-24
I was expecting suspense, but this one was pretty weird. The narrator was very good, but I did not care for the scenes with more than one voice actor.

Okay
Revisado: 01-02-21
Most of the book was not bad, though it dragged at times, but the suspenseful climax (not) was ridiculous, and the villain and motive absolutely absurd. Read the first 3/4 and then write your own ending-it will be better.

Historia
Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are head over heels, and excited to say good-bye to New York city and start a life together in Sam's sleepy hometown upstate. Or, it turns out, a life where Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam, her therapist husband, works long hours in his downstairs office, tending to the egos of his (mostly female) clientele. Little does Sam know that through a vent in his ceiling, every word of his sessions can be heard from the room upstairs.

Except part I
Revisado: 12-22-20
I almost gave up during part I because the narration was really annoying. Parts II and III were better and the story picked up. There were a couple of surprises in the book, which doesn’t often happen.

Passionate, earthy, deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable contribution to modern fiction: a vibrant new perspective of female life in the age that shaped present day civilization and values.

Interesting
Revisado: 07-08-19
As others have said, there are mispronunciations, but despite that, the narrator’s voice was very fluid and in keeping with the feel of the book. The story was interesting—weird at times, but well written.

They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Good premise
Revisado: 05-31-19
The premise of this book was good, but the execution is sloppy and lazy. It started off ok, got a little better, then got really bad. I‘m not sure how I stumbled onto this one, but I don‘t want to listen to the rest of the series. Don‘t understand something? Just ask an undergraduate student who’s had 6 or 9 hours of overview courses - they will know more than any expert in the field, and not just about their own major!

The good, the bad, and the ugly
Revisado: 05-04-19
I think anyone who is going to write about a character being pregnant and/or giving birth should read What to Expect when You’re Expecting, or at the very least talk to someone who has been pregnant. No woman has ever, at 37 weeks gestation, referred to herself as 8 months pregnant. A baby at 37 weeks gestation is also not considered premature, and it is not at all unusual for a second pregnancy to end 3 weeks before the “due date.” These references annoyed the heck out of me.
The author did do a good job at balancing perspectives with regard to justice, although Corrine was a very poorly developed character, and there were too many time jumps in the late chapters.
The narrator threw in southern accents like confetti, with just a sprinkling now and then to surprise the reader. There was no consistency to the application, either with a single character or a single sentence. It was rare enough that it was not completely annoying, but very weird.

Wish I could un-listen
Revisado: 04-06-19
I nearly stopped listening at the end of Part I. The story at that point was not compelling, and the female narrator (for Mindy, I believe, but good luck telling the female voices apart) had developed a completely robotic style. I persisted, but shouldn’t have. The one character that was supposed to have something going for them became an idiot, and the story deteriorated with ridiculous dialog. Too much about this book was just plain stupid.

Provocative story
Revisado: 03-10-19
The story is very well written and compelling. The narrator is great.
The editing is not great—the splicing of different takes is downright bizarre, going from soft voice to strong voice, especially in a section near the end in which Lale’s name is spliced in awkwardly over and over again. I found this distracting, but the book is still well worth listening to.
