Still fresh
Revisado: 03-05-25
I went on a spy story jag recently. I’ve listened to a half dozen James Bond novels and this is the fifth or sixth Mrs Pollifax story I’ve listened to over the last several months. In a streaming by comparison, Sir Ian tends to repeat himself. Somehow Mrs Pollifax stays fresh, inventive and engaging. Considering the fact that it seems like a two dimensional setup I am shocked. Give me Pollifax over Bond any day of the week. How are these novels not a franchise of blockbuster movies?!

Equal parts Mrs. Marples, James Bond, and Mr. Magoo. It is written well enough that the writing style disappears and the story remains.

A brilliant adventure! This is the perfect outcome of the sage advice for writers: “a great story is always about ordinary people in extraordinary situations.”

Everything you could want
Revisado: 02-01-25
This was an excellent story. If had enough twists and turns to stay interesting throughout. Some of the clues felt obvious and the protagonists took too long to catch them but that was the exception rather than the norm. The sub sub sub plot with the authority figure was cruel but at least it was predictable and not important. Finally, thank goodness for a talented narrator who can actually pronounce Swedish names. That felt like a gift in itself!

I had a great time listening to this. The characters were awesome. The end was forced but satisfactory in an over-the-top, silly, B-movie way. If the author was so intent on tying up every single loose ends they could have done themselves and their audience a favour by just having fewer loose ends. That said, I wasn’t expecting a literary masterpiece and I wouldn’t hesitate spending the time to listen to another book by this writer.

A mixed bag of information and misinformation.
Revisado: 12-04-24
I’ve tried to listen to this show many times. I usually get irritated by his lazy research. For example: why would he say Thomas Jefferson was Christian? There are many letters in Jefferson’s own hand stating that he did not believe Jesus was God. He was a theist! And why is he promoting the agenda of a worldly kingdom like the USA anyhow? The USA is not God’s kingdom!
On the other hand his academic work on demonology is very good. At most seminaries, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Lutheran alike, including the one I graduated from won’t touch the subject.
I doubt anyone would challenge the idea that the devil would prefer that you hear half the truth misuse d rather than hear the whole truth or none of the truth.
In none of the shows have I ever heard one iota of humility coming from the host, not have I read anything like it in the one book I read. I sincerely hope Dr Haggart asks for help from his peers and pastors to analyse whether a demon of arrogance has not attached itself to him and is influencing his agenda in writing and podcasting.

Cute but looooong
Revisado: 12-24-23
The performance was great. The author adores the characters. But maybe too much.
It was a fun story but way too many details and restatements. The cute/ shallow characters could have held up for a short story but for a full length book and depth of plot they became kinda hackneyed stereotypes. After a while the dialogue felt like an older person trying to sound young.
A good editor and some faith in the reader/listener would have made this a great book.

Historia
When a young woman is found brutally murdered in her own apartment with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist - and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the unfinished mystery she’s writing, the link between fiction and real life grows.

Fewer words pronounced correctly
Revisado: 06-24-23
The story was good but would have benefitted from being slightly more concise. The characters were well developed and interesting. I didn’t know why a few of them were in there because they just served to be another thread to keep track of but that’s a Nordic noir thing I guess.
I have mixed opinions about narration. It was performed very well. Jill Tanner is a fine actor and has a lovely voice. The pronunciation of Swedish place names could have been worse, but not by much. She nailed what Å sounds like. But honestly, I will never understand why narrators don’t just ask a native speaker, find a newsreel, or radio station in Swedish. They’re abundantly available! The consulate in any capital likely has an elderly assistant that would LOVE to help with pronunciation just to relieve their boredom and feel useful!
One of the reasons I chose this title was because I used to live near Stockholm and I just spent a beautiful winter in Luleå. I enjoyed the description of the landscape because they’re real places. It was difficult to decipher what place was being named even the names I know very well.
