Historia
Americans are a "positive" people—cheerful, optimistic, and upbeat: this is our reputation as well as our self-image. But more than a temperament, being positive, we are told, is the key to success and prosperity. In this utterly original take on the American frame of mind, Barbara Ehrenreich traces the strange career of our sunny outlook from its origins as a marginal nineteenth-century healing technique to its enshrinement as a dominant, almost mandatory, cultural attitude.

Positive thinking does not move the world
Revisado: 04-19-24
Excellent listen. I always appreciate Ehrenreich’s insights and research.
Positive thinking may help us cope with our individual situations, but it doesn’t move the world; the belief that it can lift people out of dire circumstances therefore becomes just another way to blame individuals, rather than acknowledge societal failures and institute change.

Historia
Matt Connell, a formerly successful literary agent who’s been in prison for four years for a crime of passion—homicide by strangulation after learning his wife slept with a friend—receives an early release from Sing Sing to join an FBI undercover investigation of multiple murders in Manhattan. Killings continue to mount as Matt does his best to calm his “Ferrari brain”—a condition in which his mind accelerates wildly into negative thoughts and worst-case scenarios—even as he falls in love with a suspect, then discovers disturbing truths about his past and hers.

Noir fiction at its best!
Revisado: 01-30-24
Think Maltese Falcon. Think The Third Man. Killer on the loose? Check. Femme Fatale? Possibly. Crime of passion? Crime of envy? Wry, sardonic, smart, playful, and deliciously tight. I loved listening to this book and will be ordering a paperback for a friend. Highly recommend!

Historia
Growing up gifted and working-class poor in the foothills of the Ozarks, Monica and Darci became fast friends. The girls bonded over a shared love of reading and learning, even as they navigated the challenges of their declining town and tumultuous family lives—broken marriages, alcohol abuse, and shuttered stores and factories. They pored over the giant map in their middle school classroom, tracing their fingers over the world that awaited them, vowing to escape. In the end, Monica left Clinton for college and fulfilled her dreams; Darci did not.

I have been recommending this book to everyone I know.
Heavily researched personal investigation into the circumstances that are destroying poor White women in rural America via Potts’ best friend from high school who took a very different path into adulthood than she. If you also grew up a poor a White woman, you may relate as much as I did. An empathetic and enlightening look that provides startling statistics and greater awareness. Next, we should all be asking, what can be done?

Historia
Grandpa and Noah are sitting on a bench in a square that keeps getting smaller every day. The square is strange but also familiar, full of the odds and ends that have made up their lives: Grandpa's work desk, the stuffed dragon that Grandpa once gave to Noah, the sweet-smelling hyacinths that Grandma loved to grow in her garden.

A most beautiful and gorgeously written little story. A very moving listen to ring in the new year.
