Pleasantly surprised by this book
Revisado: 04-11-20
I picked this book up off of the deal of the day, just to have something do you listen to. I was overwhelmed with the quality of the story in a little mystery that was hidden within. This is not a murder mystery but it is a mystery of unknown reasons. I highly recommend this book do anyone that cares for a subtle mystery.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Historia
Few American institutions have inflicted greater suffering on ordinary people than the Supreme Court of the United States. Since its inception the justices of the Supreme Court have shaped a nation where children toiled in coal mines, where Americans could be forced into camps because of their race, and where a woman could be sterilized against her will by state law.

Very disappointed in this book
Revisado: 09-16-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
The author light his political philosophy intrude into his writings to the point that you might as well just had him say that he's a liberal and doesn't like conservatives
What do you think your next listen will be?
I don't know what I will be listening to do next but I can guarantee you it will not be anything written by this Arthur
Would you be willing to try another one of Joe Barrett’s performances?
I have no problems with the narrator there was sometimes in the book were it repeated itself but that probably had more to do with the editing of the recording rather than the narrator
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was very disappointed in this book
Any additional comments?
The part that I was the most disappointed in was the authors interpretation or review of the court that has happened in my lifetime and I know both sides of the coin, he failed to see why the Supreme Court in life terms needs to be adjusted. He also failed to see the slippery slopes of some of the mandates approved by the courts. One of the outstanding issues that the court has done in recent years is the Chief Justice ruling on Obama care being a tax. This slippery slope started when we permitted the government's to require everyone has to have car insurance before they can operate a vehicle legally. The problem with that ruling is that we are mandating the purchase or guaranteed sale to a for profit company that then led into the Chief Justice calling Obama care a tax and you are required or mandated to purchase health insurance from a for profit company. A tax is money that is paid directly to or collected for the government. A good example of that is the military we pay taxes to the federal government, who in return purchases weapons and other items for the military. If the mandated insurance was paid directly to the government and then think government went out and bought the insurance it would then be a tax. The author was not able to understand that in the way he wrote his opinion in this book.

Historia
The decade of the 1790s has been called the age of passion. Fervor ran high as rival factions battled over the course of the new republic - each side convinced that the others' goals would betray the legacy of the Revolution so recently fought and so dearly won. All understood as well that what was at stake was not a moment's political advantage, but the future course of the American experiment in democracy. In this epochal debate, no two figures loomed larger than Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.

Revisado: 06-19-15
What would have made Jefferson and Hamilton better?
A more balanced approach to the subject matter and not liked his personal biases come through his writing so strong
What could John Ferling have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
No his subjects better take a closer look at Jefferson's accomplishments and his positions on slavery, starting back when he was a youth and especially some of the things he tried to do in the house of Burgess. It seemed to me like he used the social excepted position on Jefferson slavery attitude
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I have no problem with the narrator
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The book was so one-sided the only thing of value that I got from the book was a better understanding of Hamilton's place as the founding father
Any additional comments?
I could not recommend this book to anyone buy
