"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Life changing call
Revisado: 03-06-18
I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t feel like they fit in for some aspect of their life (as cliche as that sounds). It’s a call to brave the wilderness. It’s a call to reach deep into the courage of our heart to feel liberated. Brené Brown shares authentic ideas and experiences from her own journey and those that have impacted her. It’s a hard challenge for us to have a strong back and soft front but I believe this book can be helpful regardless of where a person is in their journey of doing just that. Thank you Brené Brown for your help. Good luck out there everyone. Remember, you’re not as alone as you think. There are other creators just like you.

The Mask of Masculinity

Historia
Lewis Howes grew up as an athlete. He was a two-sport All-American and went on to play football professionally. Howes then transferred his competitive nature from sports to business, building his podcast, The School of Greatness, into a global phenomenon. But his whole identity was built on misguided beliefs about what "masculinity" was: dangerous, false ideas learned from teammates and coaches in locker rooms and stereotypes in the media. Like so many men, Howes grew up to be angry, frustrated, and always chasing something that was never enough.

Revisado: 02-25-18
Where does The Mask of Masculinity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is what the world we live in needs. I hope to contribute to this world (in a similar way), working on myself first, continually working to take off my "Masks of Masculinity" as well. I recommend this book to every man and all humans. Here are the nine masks he talks about: the stoic mask, the athlete mask, the material mask, the sexual mask, the aggressive mask, the joker mask, the invincible mask, the know-it-all-mask, and the alpha mask. I can relate. Thank you, Lewis Howes for being vulnerable and giving men the vital courage to do the same.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Hearing it from the author.
Which character – as performed by Lewis Howes – was your favorite?
The know-it-all-mask if I'm picking one off the top of my head.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
That man has a great tool here and society does as well. We can crucial address issues like gun violence, rape culture, and substance abuse. This is the way we'll accomplish that - by encouraging men to be themselves.
Any additional comments?
Enjoy! This is the kind of book that I can come back to because it's going to be a lifetime journey to try and work towards change.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Probably the best `self help’ book I’ve read. Nothing cheesy about this book at all. I’m feeling inspired to go visit a graveyard or stand by a cliff sometime soon to feel more alive by remembering the fragility of life. I’d recommend this to everyone.

Historia
After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

On a sunny day in Berkeley, California, in 1942, a woman sees a sign in a post office window, returns to her house, and matter-of-factly begins to pack her family's possessions. Like thousands of other Japanese Americans, they have been reclassified virtually overnight as enemy aliens, and they are about to be uprooted from their home and sent to a dusty internment camp in the Utah desert.

Judith Lewis Herman's volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research in domestic violence as well as on the vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism.
