Historia
In Why We Love Serial Killers, criminology professor Dr. Scott Bonn explores our powerful appetite for the macabre, while also providing new and unique insights into the world of the serial killer, including those he has gained from his correspondence with two of the world’s most notorious examples, David Berkowitz ("Son of Sam") and Dennis Rader ("Bind, Torture, Kill").

Pretty good...Til I got angry
Revisado: 05-31-23
I'm really glad I didn't use a credit on this one. I've been interested in the serial killer phenomenon for a long time, I wouldn't say fascinated, but the subject has spun the off in many different directions, and I've discovered great books on related subjects. My main curiosity has boiled down to the seemingly inordinately high number number of serial killers in the early 1970s in America, mostly young white men in their 20s, many on the West Coast, California especially. I was in my late teens, early 20s in Sacramento, California when the East Area Rapist held his reign of terror, and that trauma left me deeply scarred, needlessly to say, not in the same realm in which others were left. However, this author lost me after the second or third reference to the "mere" 1% or the "only" 150 per year dead or " relatively insignificant threat" , or the "exaggerated", "alleged" atrocities attributed to these serial killers who, God forbid be called evil or monsters!!! WHO THE HELL CARES??? By this time, there have been enough of them, we all know. And how dare he minimize even one of those victim's lives? No. Nope. Not today. Not ever.

Driven by his tragic past, prosecutor Chance Meridian seeks justice for a beautiful woman brutally murdered in her own home. Except nothing comes easy in Atlanta, and certainly not justice. A lot of people in town wanted Sara Barton dead, and every single one of them is lying about something. Chance shouldn't be surprised. Murder is an ugly business. But so is love.

Really good story, pretty grim.
Revisado: 05-15-22
I enjoyed this book very much. The story is complex enough to keep my interest, even if I did have some trouble keeping the characters straight. Lots of of names starting with the same letter, and most of the men's names were monosyllabic - Bill, Jim, San, etc. The atmosphere is dark, ranging from hopeless to pessimistic to sad. That being said, it's a substantial book and I respect it! The narrator performed perfectly: first person, even tone, nice accent, letting the story unfold slowly with the perfect attitude for the dark resignedness of the character. Looking forward to another.

This book doesn't fall into the category I favor, so I was skeptical. But after a seemingly superficial start -, it GRABBED me! Definitely worth the wait! Kept me listening compulsively! Great book, lots of twists. Highly recommend it.

I loved this book!!! Of course, it's dark but so good. I was offered it as included because I'd listening to We Need To Talk About Kevin, which was also darkly great, but this one is better! And not as tediously annoying (but the ending is well worth it). Yeh other reviewers maybe just don't get it. And to call it a "coming of age" story is so off the mark. Great characters, good and evil. Suspense, surprise, definitely recommend this one.

I was excited to see that Jaws was offered in the Included books. I read Jaws back when the movie first came out and loved it. I named my new kitten Benchley! But this is a very different book from that one. There must be two versions. However, I enjoyed this one too. Chief Brody's dry humor is well portrayed by the reader. A blast from the past for sure.

He was discovered holding a knife, her blood beneath his nails. He himself doesn't know whether he's guilty or innocent. To reconstruct the story, the writer must now become the protagonist, searching the corridors of his life and the city he loves.

I really enjoyed this one! Bonus: Humor!
Revisado: 06-02-21
This was s book that was included in my membership, and I think it's an author I would like to pursue. I have found many great new authors this way, although one must wade through many unsatisfactory partial listens to get to the good ones. The ratio is like 15:1 but worth the exploration. Scott Brick is one of my favorites, but he tends toward the dramatic and serious. This did not, however, diminish the great humor.

In 1999, Emmon Bodfish was murdered in his home in the wealthy enclave of Orinda, California, just east of San Francisco. For the young crime-scene analyst Paul Holes, it quickly became the most bizarre and surprising case of his storied career. It was immediately clear how Emmon had died: by being hit over the head with a heavy object. What wasn’t clear was who did it and why.

I appreciate the dedication of all involved. Such a tragedy how persons can be completely destroyed by childhood torture. Also tragic is the way Eammon passed on the same kind of soul destroying treatment to his own son.
