American James Bond. Worth listening to.

The book reminds me very much of the literary Bond. Not the polished movie character, but the ruthless, hard man that appears in Fleming's earlier books. Without much conscience or compassion Matt Helm goes to work in this pseudo spy thriller. I will listen to it again probably and definitely go on to the Wrecking Crew, the only book with a film adaptation starting Dean Martin as Matt Helm.

I have been searching for a compelling new character since finishing the Jack Reacher and Cotton Malone series of books. I really enjoyed the first Joe Tesla novel. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

A gem from out of nowhere. Wonderful.

I had no idea what this book was or who the author is. I honestly don't even remember buying it (by that happens a lot). So I didn't get around to listening to it for a long time. It turns out it was really well written and executed. The story is very interesting and the reality it creates is very comprehensive. I think you will enjoy it a lot.

Another winner from Lee Child and Dick Hill.

Where does Make Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is another in the top few of the series, maybe third or fourth in terms of my favorites of the series. The best of which is Bad Luck and Trouble. The story is COMPLETELY unpredictable. I sometimes go back and listen to the books again once I know the full story to find the crumbs left along the way for really sharp people to pick up on and they were masterfully done, extremely subtle and there. I find this series to be maybe my favorite of the genre of the anti-hero or roaming hero. Bond was excellent. John Milton is very very good. Jack Reacher is far and away the best series as a whole for me. I like that Reacher is paired with someone throughout the book -it adds to the dynamic and provides someone for Reacher to be invested in and protect which adds complexity.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Reacher.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His gravelly voice gives weight to the story and the characters. I have a hard time replicating that in my head.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was floored when the true motive of the town's people was revealed. I could not have sorted that out in advance given a decade.

Where does Second Son: A Jack Reacher Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Excellent novella! My second favorite of the short stories behind Small Wars. The development of Reacher and his brother and father really added depth to the characters as referenced in the rest of the series (for me). I love being privy to what is going on inside Reacher's head through the story. Wonderful short listen. I should note that while I LOVE Dick Hill's narration I generally listen to him at 1.2-1.5 speed for added tension and excitement. Try it.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. Way ahead of me all along. I didn't figure it out and I love when Lee Child outsmarts me.

Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?

Reacher - always

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. Some celebratory whoops may have been had when Reacher takes on two bullies in the street though.

Would you try another book from Lee Child and/or Dick Hill?

I love the series. The BEST of the series is either Killing Floor or Bad Luck and Trouble. This title is not great. The story isn't bad, the performance was very good because Dick Hill is almost always good but as a whole the book fails to grab me by the lapel and shake me like better ones from the series do. It is worth listening to once (unlike the books 2,3,4 done by Johnathan McClain which are totally brutal and mutilated by the performance).

Would you be willing to try another book from Lee Child? Why or why not?

Yes, I love Lee Child with Dick Hill reading.

Not to be missed. If you haven't heard any Reacher books just start here. Its excellent and required none of the backstory.

Not the best Fargo adventure.

I enjoyed it and lost track of the convoluted reality they uncovered in a series of discoveries. I am going back for a second listen to try and put it all together.

I haven't listened to anything by Steve Berry and bought it because I like the narrator. I am glad - I enjoyed the w ritting style quite a bit.
