About 50 percent commercials...
Revisado: 09-18-22
When the first nine and a half minutes are all commercials, you'd expect that the remaining 40 minutes would be story. Nope. Lots and lots and lots of commercials, with intermittent bits of story.
It's like those free vacations to a time share where you spend the whole time in a lobby getting hit with sales pitches.
Brutal.

Wow! That guy got railroaded on scant evidence...
Revisado: 09-15-22
Tough podcast to rate. It's really well put together, and a compelling story. But it's also REALLY prosecution/decedent's family biased. And it REALLY tries to push the narrative that a guilty verdict means he did it, and that he must have manipulated his children to say he didn't do it.
I say decedent, because I am not convinced by the evidence that this guy should have been convicted.
Don't get me wrong, the guy is a huge Dbag ... unlikable is too mild a term. But the only sentient person unquestionably in the apartment confirmed the medical examiner at the time's conclusions - slip and fall. (I didn't get one thing. Did the daughter only testify (have a letter read) at sentencing? That seems weird. She had pretty important things to say about guilt/innocence.)
It's frightening to think that this constitutes "evidence beyond a reasonable doubt". It makes sense that the United States has one of the highest incarceration rates of any nation in the history of the world. We're a culture that's very quick to believe the worst of each other, especially when people aren't likable.
It would be interesting to see this done as a podcast focusing on the power of victims and their families to bend the process towards conviction, even where seasoned investigators and prosecutors have determined that there's insufficient evidence. Then jurors, who often assume there's enough there if the prosecutors brought the case, can be swayed by emotional arguments and testimony, or by plain old dislike.
In a way, the pocast's flaws are inherent in the way criminal defense attorneys and prosecutors usually conduct their public relations. Here, the prosecutors and police are very willing to talk about the successful work they've done in getting a conviction. The defendant and his attorneys have to be tight lipped because success means a new trial, not an exoneration. So a reporter is going to get more information from the prosecutors.
But I think the reporters here really step pretty far into the realm of advocacy for the decedent and her family, and the podcast ultimately suffers because of that advocacy.
It kept me listening, though. So overall 3 stars.

The Coast Of Leitrim is a love story which explores the relationship between an Irish man and a Polish woman he meets in a café. "It’s got perfect pitch... with a raconteur tone" according to judge Kit de Waal.

Excellent Story

This story reminds me of a modern version of White Nights by Dostoyevsky, except with a happy ending. Very well done.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Fern feels invisible. Her dad is forever planning how to boost business at the family restaurant. Her mom is constantly going off to meditate. Her sister, Sarah, who’s taking a year off after high school, is too busy finding ways not to work, and her brother Holden is totally focused on his new "friend". And then there’s Charlie: three years old, a "surprise" baby, and the center of everything. If it wasn’t for her friend Ran, there would be nowhere to turn. Ran is always calm, always positive.
