To truly understand the origin of Wabi-Sabi, we must tackle the origin of the ceremony of tea as the two are deeply intertwined. It was the year 1191 when the green tea finally reached the shores of Japan and became an integral part of the ceremony of tea. The person responsible for bringing green tea into Japan all the way from China was Myoan Eisai — a monk of the Song Dynasty. More importantly, he founded the first Rinzai school in Japan (one of the three sects of Japanese Buddhism). His greatest contribution to the ceremony of tea was the cultivation of tea seeds all over the country. One, in particular, is the city of Uji, which to this day, maintains a reputation for producing some of the best matcha green tea powder in the world. By the start of the 12th century, Zen Buddhism and tea cultivation were at its peak. However, the ceremony of tea wasn't practiced until the 15th century. It was then that a monk and tea master named Murata Shuko formally linked the preparation and consumption of green tea as a manifestation of the guiding principles of Zen Buddhism. As such, he is widely recognized as the father of the ceremony of tea. He left a lasting influence on the Japanese culture, which persists even to the modern-day.

General purpose refers to the ability to be used across a wide spectrum of domains. Solidity, a new programming language, was written specifically for Ethereum, so it is not a general-purpose language. You can’t use Solidity to write codes for programs outside of Ethereum. C, C+, C++, and Java are examples of general-purpose languages that you have probably heard of. The fact that Python is a general-purpose language and can be used with Linux is quite significant. Consider that the first iteration of Linux was a command-line interface, in which people had to type out computer code in order to access the programs that they wanted. The language that had to be used, a Unix scripting language, was said to be domain specific instead of general purpose. You needed to learn the language just to be able to use Linux, and it wasn’t useful for much else beyond that. Today, however, Linux has a graphical user interface, so you do not need to know the Unix scripting language in order to use it. You can take your knowledge of a general-purpose language, like Python, and use it to create applications and write patches for the Linux kernel.

Approximately 20,000 known species of bee, the Western honey bee, or Apis mellifera, is just one, although it is perhaps the most commonly known. Debate aside, these bees are still commonly known as honeybee (one word) and will generally be referred to as such in this book. Beekeeping has been known from practically the beginnings of recorded history. They’ve been documented in cave paintings, Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, and various inscriptions from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece. Indeed, some remains from the Middle East suggest that people in this region became so proficient that a single beekeeping operation might have been able to harvest honey from as many as 1 million bees. Wherever honeybees were kept, they were valued, and ancient peoples kept records of how they harvested honey and wax from beehives. There are two main species of domesticated honeybee from which these substances are obtained presently. These species are Apis mellifera and Apis cerana. Apis mellifera is the so-called Western honey bee and is the main species of domesticated bee known in the West, although like its Asian counterpart, Apis cerana, there are notable subspecies.

A lot of kids believe that food comes from the grocery store. As a kid, you likely knew that eggs came from hens, but you also probably didn't care what the whole process entailed. Children learn to respect animals more when they know that their foods come from them. Also, chickens are much easier to care for, unlike other animals. Once you have set up your backyard flock, they will require very little care daily. All the hens need from you are food, shelter, and regular exercise. That is right – chickens need exercise too. The only time you will need to invest considerable time and effort is when you are building your chicken coop and preparing a new home for your flock. After you have established everything, you may not spend more than ten minutes a day to ensure the flock has enough food, water, and scraps. You can also check for eggs during this time. If you allow your hens to the free-range outside of their coop, you might need to clean out every three to four weeks. You will also need to hose your back patio more regularly.
