Historia
The idea of the unspoilt and unchanging village is one of the most potent in the English imagination. Yet the English village is plainly dying. The unaltered rhythms of village life have all but vanished. But not without a trace…they exist in the voices of men and women for whom the old ways were life-shaping realities. Richard Askwith describes a journey in search of the true country dwellers.

got bored after a while
Revisado: 12-06-22
got bored after a while, the writer travels and travels and it seems only for the Narrator to excel with all the age and dialects! Maybe due to this I just lost interest there were so many characters.

2 and a half star out of 5.
I bought this book during COVID first waves. And I would not help to compare - SPOILER - global virus then vaccine then sterilisation, then genocide...
The narration was not too bad, given it was a female and most of the main charaters are male. SPOILER the nighmares about the genocide was really disturbing. How one would perform a battle in the space..., I kind of skipped that part.
The story was interesting especially due to the curious circumastances. The better part is the first half-2 third when the investigation is on-going. The end felt a bit empty...

Historia
The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against the city of Troy, to which they will lay siege for 10 whole and very bloody years. It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers the war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of them all. Aphrodite bribes Paris with the heart of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of the Greeks, and naturally, nature takes its course.

Excellent (again)
Revisado: 12-06-22
After listening to Heros and Mythology I was waiting for this audio to come out and purchased it right away.
Stephen Fry did not dissapoint.
Altough I read many times the Troy story in XX.cent.syle, so I was familiar with the narrative, Mr.Fry was able to make it even more contemporary. It felt like I was watching a movie about a recent war, with all the personal details and feelings.
Of course also in this volume are explanatory comments.
I would highly recommend for high school studens.

Not for me
Revisado: 12-06-22
Altough I have not read any viking /nordic sagas but this book seemed like one. So from this perspective I would say this is a very good creation of a saga. Especially as, according to the closing, was intended as one.
Lots of battle, fight, cursed love, elf/troll, lots of tragedies, death, changeling vs fairies etc., usage of special epic language. Sadly did not provide for me any benefits, besides the literature curiosity. Bit like Lord of the Rings just darker and shorter.
Performance was good.

Did not finish
Revisado: 12-06-22
The narration from Vanessa Kirby is very good. She has a very smooth British accent.
The story sets out interestingly, from Morgan childhood to school years, first love then first marriage but then somewhere in the last third it lost me. The story of Morgan was not finished. Ok, we have to wait till Arthurs grows up which is approx 15 years...and of course there is the marketing/money making purpose to make it a series thus sell more books...This is what I felt at the end.
I still keep this audio but I wont buy the next from the series.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Less known facts collected from less known topics
Revisado: 05-20-20
There are 4 stories around 4 different topics. 2 regarding USA history/people, 2 regarding European history/people. Me being an European could not connect to the American presidency.
The dino-war was interesting if you are interested in dinosaurs.
The footwear-war was shocking in regards how the butterfly-effect works.
I liked the narration- there is one principle person, the others are making "background noises" - was clear, easy to understand.
I am tempted to have a go with the next audiobook from this series.

Round and round
Revisado: 05-20-20
Firstly, I usually give my star rating in general: 1-horrible, 3-ok, 5- love it. I just have realized what is the meaning here on audible. Why would 2* be "its okay"?...
So the story for me was not okay. The story is just revolving around, going back to the same places over again with the same persons! From an investigative, supposedly fun book, I would expect a bit more imagination from the writer.
Sadly the narration is mediocre but I could have put up with that if the story been better.
I did not finish this book, I did not want to waste my time and my nerves.

Average modern day fairytale
Revisado: 05-03-20
Not a nice performance from both. Cannot distinguish the different voices. Terrible Irish and USA accents. I stopped in the middle of the 2nd chapter.
Story: set in modern days, mistique creatures are among us..., instant attraction... Background story could be promising.

Revisado: 02-21-20
unfortunately there is a sound quality issue with this title. When there is no conversation, the music/ background is distorted.
The story is ok. nothing special. I bought to practice my German. Would suffice for that expect for the bad quality.
I will try to return it.

A Must
Revisado: 11-28-18
I read the book first. Of course that is a different experience.
The audiobook did give back the overall tone and feeling of the book. Sure they did not translated everything but did a pretty good dramatization.
It was better to hear from the actors what I was reading in my head.
I still re-listen and still laugh out loud!
I wait eagerly for the tv series!!!
