Historia
Dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his insight into the nature of popular music. He writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from Stephen Foster to Elvis Costello, and in between ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone. He analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. These essays are written in Dylan’s unique prose. And while ostensibly about music, they are really meditations on the human condition.

Fun and Instructive
Revisado: 01-24-23
The audiobook is what this book is mean to be. I can imagine just reading words on a page, but hearing them is far more fun at least, if not more interesting. The choices of who would read each part was brilliant at times and, at times, questionable. But always good in the sense of not haven’t all these stories and insights tied to one voice. It’s good Dylan’s own voice is the default reader throughout, but also good that he’s not the only reader. The writing is unexpectedly Dylanesque in that is clear and concise, strong with images and in its phrasing The writing can verge on poetry without becoming syrupy or poetically obscure. It’s a well-written, well-thought out, well-executed audio and intellectual experience. It will also teach almost any serious music lover something new about music in general and the specific songs covered in particular.

Historia
Join Clara Parkes on a cross-country adventure and meet a cast of characters that includes the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Travel the country with her as she meets a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins.

Delightful Surprise
Revisado: 11-19-21
I’m not an knitter, a fabric person, or even a woman, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book since it does one of my favorite things to read about: following a process through all its details and choices and people and issues, all the while filling historical background seamlessly. It’s the story of a slice of American industry/ingenuity that becomes universal since it’s shared with most cultures worldwide.

Stunnning
Revisado: 12-22-19
If you want a synopsis of the Apollo program, this is not for you. I wanted as much detail, technical and otherwise, as I could get. I wasn’t disappointed. The detail is there, but mixed into fine storytelling. It was instructive and exciting, a hard combo to achieve.

Excellent crisp interview
Revisado: 08-19-16
Both interviewer and Hawkins are Cochise and clear without being robotic. Left me wanting to follow up with other sources rather than feeling overloaded. No writerly angst or blather. No interviewer showoffy or meandering questions or responses. A model for a short interview.
