Historia
Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church - the only available shelter from the rain - and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her newfound security. Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood.

Robinson's tenderness for her characters, their grace for each other and the beauty of language and metaphor make this a stunning, heartrending read.

Beauty, wisdom and grace
Revisado: 06-10-21
A book of beautiful descriptions of everyday moments, of deep reflection, of grasping with one's own humanness and of grace.
I need to read this again.

Historia
The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire. Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.

A beautiful story beautifully read
Revisado: 03-03-21
This story left me breathless on more than one occasion with its beauty of language, its richness of metaphor, its sharpness of insight into character.
Jeremy Irons reading was sonorous and he characterised each person so well.
I also enjoyed listening to the corresponding episodes of The Circe Institute's podcast Close Reads for discussions that have me now insight and stimulated my thinking on the book.
I'm so glad I read this.

Beautiful
Revisado: 09-08-19
This is a beautiful story of a life of love, for family, for place. There is sadness in seeing old ways of life changing but also strength and hope.
Susan Denaker spoke Hannah's voice with feeling and I can't I was actually listening to Hannah share her story.

Exciting and well read
Revisado: 03-03-19
My kids were enthralled by this story. It was exciting and showed how things can seem good but actually cause problems. The results of unwise actions were shown as well as an interesting redemptive resolution.
The narrator did a great job. It was very clear who the characters were.
