I loved this book. Dr. Lemke draws on her experience in therapy, she sites studies and ties it together into a book readable for the layperson. About the necessity for humans to have a balance of pleasure and pain& perfection and imperfection, it is something many need to read.

I really enjoyed this book and wholeheartedly agree with the author that I can do things to benefit others as a means to make money. However, I question when people who have wealth and power say, "Make your Money work for you" because I wonder 'who is making things work for me?" I ask, "Is it the immigrants in my neighborhood who work 24/7 for the property flippers? Is it a child mining gold for my stock portfolio?" I tend to believe that Kiyosaki may never understand the truths/perspectives that his Stanford-educated father may have believed. I agree that societies can sometimes gain wealth with contributing workers, progress, and productivity. In that sense, Kyosaki's claim that, "You too can be rich!" makes some sense. However, not all systems are zero-sum. For instance, if one person in my county owns all the farmland, then it means the other 2000 do not. If everyone owns an equal share, then no one is richer than the other. Elements of power and wealth--be it political, wealth, assets or control-- mean some win and others "are making Kiyosaki's money work for him" as he says. This said Kiyosoki, --like all humans-- has his own psychological bias on how he sees the world, money, power, and inequity. With that significant, ubiquitous 'elephant in the room' acknowledged, I am glad I read the book. Staunch capitalists with predisposed beliefs that 'everyone can get rich' will otherwise love this book. Still, I am glad I picked up some things from his life journey and insights--despite his ostensibly implicit assumptions on equality, wealth, and power distribution.

When a woke movement becomes like a dogmatic belief, it can harm people of color. When social change is not turned into a religion or witch hunt, as the author writes, then woke awareness will have a better chance of flourishing rather than being criticized by political opposition and the social movement will better help minorities. I work in my life as someone who supports minority empowerment and education and I am glad McWhorer took the courage to publish this book. Thanks to him.

I listened to this audiobook multiple times. It's clear this author is educated as a therapist and provides excellent cognitive tools rooted in research. It's also accessible to anyone. This is a book that would sell itself because it is good in and of itself. Anyone who struggles with anxiety, fear, decision, and happiness needs to read this book.

It was helpful to hear reminders to be courageous, and to have someone 'kick me in the pants' to "do" in life. The book reminded me of some of my cognitive biases standing in the way of my taking action. Hearing motivation is something I need once in a while and that was the core of this book. Personally (for me), I got more out of books coming from psychologists or experts rooted in research. The author sells his story/career using his "no nonsense" literary voice supplemented with cusswords and jokes that I found distracting b/c it felt more like marketing strategies (just like the title ostensibly intended to catch attention.) I am not sorry I read it, but I don't know that I learned a lot, but I did get a good motivational speech.

I took the positives from this book for self-growth, but I admittedly have difficulty with how the pastor's "honesty with self" applies to particular religious or cultural views, but never comes close to honesty regarding tragedies of our times. For instance, most Christians cannot be honest with themselves about how the store-bought pig meat that they eat comes from farms where the animals display psychological distress being in small cages. They cannot be honest with themselves about how their hummers contribute to climate change, gas prices, and how it affects others. In fact, most pastors who attempted a sermon on how we need to be honest with ourselves about how we can make a difference to environment, animals, and the poor by eating a plant-based diet... those pastors might get booted from their church. In fact, particular Christians will they'll deny that it's even a problem --that's how far off they are on "being honest with themselves." I am aware that all of [we, me included] humans selectively choose what's important, what's harmful, and what wars are justified in the name of our own culture, religion, tribe, and country. However, there are some things so wrong and overlooked by Christians that it's hard to stomach. In sum, it was hard for me to get past this in my read --this book had a specific cultural and religious context that speaks to it's own audience rather than to me or many others.
