Historia
In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

Not a plot or clear through line
Revisado: 03-22-25
My book club picked this and I tried really hard but I could not follow this book. It's written like the stream of consciousness of a crazy old lady. No real plot. Couldn't finish it.

Historia
Can’t Hurt Me, David Goggins’ smash hit memoir, demonstrated how much untapped ability we all have but was merely an introduction to the power of the mind. In Never Finished, Goggins takes you inside his Mental Lab, where he developed the philosophy, psychology, and strategies that enabled him to learn that what he thought was his limit was only his beginning and that the quest for greatness is unending.

Feels less than Can't Hurt Me
Revisado: 12-26-22
The book starts by telling you that it is not a self-help book but it reads much more like one than his previous book Can't Hurt Me. Mot enough story here.

If Brene and Glennon led a church, I'd be in the front row EVERY Sunday. Bonus points if Abby leads the choir. YOU LADIES MAKE US ALL SMARTER AND MORE WHOLE.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Lighthearted fun without being Lightheaded
Revisado: 07-19-21
Really enjoyed this as a fun romantic comedy lighthearted read. The lead female characters were witty, introspective and driven in their lives. The romantic parts were fun and light (PG-13). The narrator did equally well with male and female voices and kept me engaged. Will seek out a future book from the author and narrator.

Magical Thriller Turned Sappy Romance Trash
Revisado: 03-25-21
I really enjoyed the first two books. This was all trashy romance talk of teens kissing and losing their virginity. I kept waiting for the characters to grow or story to build and instead it dragged out between overly dramatic and repetitive descriptions of kissing between the two lead characters. I didn't need to hear about their magical lines intertwining every time. Wish author had kept to story line instead of racking up word count.

Worth the time
Revisado: 01-28-21
Not every trilogy can keep the same level of character building, momentum, action and plot twists throughout. This one did. I am not in the military, I'm not familiar with naval life or nautical terms and wouldn't be called a prepper by anyone - by all means I shouldn't relate to this book. Nevertheless the content, characters and old fashioned American ingenuity kept my attention at every turn. Well written, well read, well done.

Historia
Dolly Parton is instantly recognizable for her iconic style and persona, but how did she create her enduring image? Dolly crafted her exaggerated appearance and stage personality by combining two opposing stereotypes - the innocent mountain girl and the voluptuous sex symbol. By developing a multilayered image and persona, Dolly both critiques representations of femininity in country music and attracts a diverse fan base ranging from country and pop music fans to feminists and gay rights advocates.

Academic paper - not a biography
Revisado: 10-15-20
I am bailing a few chapters in. The book is written in an academic text book style. I learned everything I wanted to hear in the forward. The take away- Dolly used her feminine charm and backwoods roots to disarm men and allow her a platform to make commentary about gender and culture stereotypes in America and country music. I don't think you need chapters to make that point.

Felt like a Classic
Revisado: 07-31-20
A reflection upon pre-War, post Prohibition New York society. The country was growing up and living certain rigid society norms behind to embrace jazz, women in the work place and a new middle class. The book follows characters that are wrestling with the same. Felt very much like Gatsby or Hemingway. Written beautifully with light words, scenes that lift your spirit and in many ways are sad and hauntingly true.

Interesting Backstory
Revisado: 06-05-20
Was an easy read and held some familiar names and places. My only criticism was so many overt references and foreshadowing.
The tale is timeless and has many parallels to our current political climate. If you loved the Hunger Games, this will be a comfortable and pleasurable read.
