Historia
Old English is the language you think you know until you actually hear or see it. Unlike Shakespearean English or even Chaucer's Middle English, Old English—the language of Beowulf—defies comprehension by untrained modern readers. Used throughout much of Britain more than a thousand years ago, it is rich with words that haven't changed (like word), others that are unrecognizable (such as neorxnawang, or paradise), and some that are mystifying even in translation ( gafol-fisc, or tax-fish).

Wonderful to hear the Old English words spoken so clearly
Revisado: 11-18-24
I really enjoy learning about Old English words so this book is perfect. Very easy to listen to. This book could only be improved by turning it into a 'whispersync.'

Historia
Our use of language naturally evolves and is a living breathing thing that reflects who we are. Says Who? offers clear, nuanced guidance that goes beyond “right” and “wrong” to empower us to make informed language choices. Never snooty or scoldy (yes, that’s a “real” word!), this book explains where the grammar rules we learned in school actually come from and reveals the forces that drive dictionary editors to label certain words as slang or unacceptable.

I was surprised to learn that usage rules can be outdated or just wrong. I truly enjoyed how
Wordies were contrasted with Grammandos. l like to think of myself as a Wordie. I also purchased the Kindle and Hardcover versions for reference.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Perfect Stephen King, Fantastic Narration
Revisado: 05-31-24
These stories remind me of the earlier Stephen King horror novels I loved so much: The Stand, The Shining, It, Cujo, etc. You know - ordinary decent people caught in unbelievably horrible situations. I'm so amazed at Will Patton's excellent narration! He does crotchety old men, psychotic cops, frightened children, and despairing middle aged men and women equally well. It's always great to find a book on Audible by one of your favorite writers read by someone who's a joy to listen to.

Background Sounds Very Distracting
Revisado: 11-21-23
Stephen Fry was an excellent narrator, as always. However, I found it hard to concentrate on, or even hear, what he was saying because of the loud sound effects/background noises. I tried turning off my phone's Dolby Atmos but it didn't help.

Historia
Since the Victorian period, it has been understood that the story of Noah, iconic in the Book of Genesis, and a central motif in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, derives from a much older story that existed centuries before in ancient Babylon. But the relationship between the Babylonian and biblical traditions was shrouded in mystery. Then, in 2009, Irving Finkel, a curator at the British Museum and a world authority on ancient Mesopotamia, found himself playing detective.

Very enjoyable to listen to.
Revisado: 01-07-22
Irving Finkel is an excellent reader. He makes his points in a logical, easy to understand way. He's also very funny. I don't doubt he is an expert Assyriologist and obviously an expert on Semitic languages. I would love to learn to read cuneiform just from listening to this book.
However, I disagree that the captive Jews in Babylon incorporated the Sumerian/Assyrian flood story into their Biblical one. Abram of Ur was a contemporary of Noah and Shem and could have gotten the story first hand. Captive Jews like Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel were obsessed with keeping and preserving the Law of Moses, which included the Noah's flood story.

Historia
There are few things more in common across cultures than the belief in ghosts. Ghosts inhabit something of the very essence of what it is to be human. Whether we personally 'believe' or not, we are all aware of ghosts and the rich mythologies and rituals surrounding them. They have inspired, fascinated and frightened us for centuries - yet most of us are only familiar with the vengeful apparitions of Shakespeare, or the ghastly spectres haunting the pages of 19th-century Gothic literature. But their origins are much, much older.

Very informative, fun to listen to!
Revisado: 12-22-21
I really enjoyed listening to Irving Finkel read his new book on ghosts. He makes the ghost stories, spells, and tales of the underworld from the Ancient Cuneiform texts come alive. He is very funny throughout. His Afterword has the best argument I ever heard on why people could believe in ghosts and why those who adamantly don't are really ignoring the past.
Audible should get Irving Finkel to read other books by other authors. There is nothing dull, dry, or stuffy in his reading.

Historia
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.
