Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Murderbot is amazing. If you haven't heard the entire series get that done. The narrator is an old favorite of mine so it was lovely to hear him again.

Amazing end to series, awful narration
Revisado: 12-10-24
Martha Wells is one of my favorite authors ever. But this last book in the series is narrated by a different narrator than the first four. That happens but the narrator made no effort to pronounce names the same way the other did, and made voices that were high and fast in the first book deep and slow, and vice versa. It made everything and everyone sound and come across so differently. Honestly, just try to read the book. Otherwise, you mostly get over it eventually.

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

Novelette only so not long, but such a cute story. I love the way she combines personalities and backgrounds to make everything so perfectly plausible and redeem past wrongs with skills and experience they didn't have to avoid it in the first place.

Historia
Princess Sun has finally come of age. Growing up in the shadow of her mother, Eirene, has been no easy task. The legendary queen-marshal did what everyone thought impossible: expel the invaders and build Chaonia into a magnificent republic, one to be respected - and feared. But the cutthroat ambassador corps and conniving noble houses have never ceased to scheme - and they have plans that need Sun to be removed as heir, or better yet, dead. To survive, the princess must rely on her wits and companions: her biggest rival, her secret lover, and a dangerous prisoner of war.

Historia
Two years of living with his controlling boyfriend left Chico worn down long before that boyfriend revealed he'd been seeing someone else. With no other choice, Chico moves in above his cousin's garage in a small town in the redwoods, where he merely goes through the motions. To get him out of the house, his cousin pushes him to volunteer at a local dance studio to help with their annual show. He's not expecting to end up in a dance class, or to start feeling alive again in the arms of his dance instructor, Rafael.

Read the book instead
Revisado: 01-25-21
I'm a huge fan of R. Cooper and some of her audiobooks are divine. This is not one of them. It's a great story so please go buy the book if you don't have it. But the narrator is awful for this story and takes what should be shy, sweet, and smoldery and makes it full of exclamation points. Maybe you won't mind if you haven't read the book, but I've got plenty of her audiobooks that I've never read on paper or ereader and am head over heels in love with them. I think this one I would have written off sooner if I hadn't kept hanging in there trying to recapture the love I had for the written version.

Amazing Worldbuilding
Revisado: 01-12-21
I've followed Hurley since she started and she's one of the great worldbuilders, up there with Sanderson and N.K. Jemison. This one made me sit and ponder so many times trying to both figure out the world and being fascinated by how much sense it made while still being entirely alien. The storyline is not formulaic, even though that could have been fine in the setting but the ending subverted my expectations while still being entirely consistent. I loved it. I wish it were a series.

Wonderful story. First two narrated beautifully
Revisado: 10-24-18
I had already read this trilogy before I purchased the audiobooks and it's as good as I remembered. Not Berg's best work, but still worth the read. The narrators of the first two books are superb. The narrator for Dante in the third book is so appallingly bad I almost gave up on it. Only the fact that I was engrossed in the story already, and the occasional reprieve of the POV changing back to one of the first two narrators, kept me going.
I had to turn up his chapters to 1.2 speed and it's still rather slow. He reads as if each sentence is the only one he's aware of and he over-enunciates the odd word and is overdramatic with it because it's the only chance to impress you. It's loathsome. I've learned to put up with bad writing or narration if the goal is worth it but it's really bad.
Honesty, just get the first two and content yourself that the lingering plot issues are resolved in the third book. Better yet, buy the book and read it. The story good. I'm simply shocked at how awful this last narrator is.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
