Historia
Six close friends shaped the role their country would play in the dangerous years following World War II. They were the original best and brightest, whose towering intellects, outsize personalities, and dramatic actions would bring order to the postwar chaos, and whose strong response to Soviet expansionism would leave a legacy that dominates American policy to this day. In April 1945, they converged to advise an untutored new president, Harry Truman.

A wonderful book marred by a narrator who struggled with the pronunciation of many names and words. Distracting but not fatal. Great story.

Historia
A sweeping narrative that remakes our understanding of perhaps the most consequential period in American history, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic shows how the great contest of that age is also the great contest of our age—and serves as a necessary reminder of how young and fragile our democracy truly is.

Pedantic but Important
Revisado: 07-10-24
Poor narration. Should use a professional. Many mispronounciations. Pedantic to the point of drowning the message in the detail. It's a very important story that is poorly served by this book and narrator.

Important but incomplete
Revisado: 12-19-23
Very important topic. An important reminder. A little shallow in as much as the author missed an opportunity to talk about the origins of tribalism and the sources of intolerance that manifest in cancel culture. While offering a menu of action to mitigate or avoid it there is too much of “just say no and don’t do it”.
The reader was screechy and too fast in her reading. It felt like a nervous teenager reading a book report to her class. Couldn’t wait to finish

Historia
Two leading authorities—an acclaimed historian and the outstanding battlefield commander and strategist of our time—collaborate on a landmark examination of war since 1945. Conflict is both a sweeping history of the evolution of warfare up to Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine, and a penetrating analysis of what we must learn from the past—and anticipate in the future—in order to navigate an increasingly perilous world.

Patraeus Sees Justice in Every Conflict
Revisado: 11-16-23
This is a self serving and shallow review of the unbelievable number of conflicts in which the US has been involved with virtually no thought given to the very role of a military establishment in a civilized society. Every failure, of which there are many, is blamed on someone other than the generals.

Historia
What did the US Constitution originally mean, and how can we recover the intentions of its framers? These questions, which resound throughout today’s most heated legal and political controversies, lie at the heart of Jack N. Rakove’s splendidly readable work of historical analysis. In Original Meanings, he traces the complex weave of ideology and interests from which the Constitution emerged and shows how Americans have attached different meanings to their founding document from the moment it was published.

This book is best seen as a required reading for a class in Constitutional Law. It is too technical for the lay reader no matter how interested they are in the pros and cons of original intent.
