Story: 3.5……Writing: 2.0……Narration: 1.0 Blech!

The story would have been better if it wasn’t so difficult to get past the poor writing style and the awful narration. The narrator’s cringe-worthy I’ll-use of the pronunciation “thee” instead of the was obsessive.

Started out promising, then devolved.
Revisado: 03-19-25
Started out decent, but too much was given away too soon, making the outcome quite predictable from early on. Then the ending was dragged out painfully.

Excellent plot twists!
Revisado: 12-01-24
Suspenseful. Emotional. And a bit of batshit crazy thrown in for good measure! This is probably my favorite K. L. Slater novel so far. The storyline is intriguing and the plot twists were nonstop, yet carefully woven together. Excellent execution, overall!

Boring. Repetitive. Annoying.
Revisado: 11-22-24
This book was so boring repetitive and annoying. It was like nail scratching on a chalkboard. Just listening to it made me feel like it was going to drive me insane. The denouement made up for some of the torture that the bulk of the book forced me to endure. However, it didn’t make the book worth the read.

Boring Plot and not the greatest narration
Revisado: 09-10-24
Lawson needs to get a better editor. His passive tense writing is distracting and likely makes his books 20% longer than necessary. He also commits basic writing errors that are disturbingly obvious. Further, Lawson writes about people of color as if he’s a racist at worst, or just grossly oblivious to his racist tendencies and biases, at best.
Finally, I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but i found this one boring. The narrator’s “acting” choices didn’t help. I’m hoping Book 4 will be much better.

Edge of Your Seat Moments!
Revisado: 08-26-24
DeMarco is likable, but sometimes nitwitted and frustratingly oblivious. Yet, his character carried the plot well. The mix of nefarious characters and dark secrets made this multilayered story captivating and worrisome. Of course, Scott Brick is always good. He’s my narrator crush…or at least his narrating is😄
I’m looking forward to Book 2 in the DeMarco series. (Unfortunately, I don’t think Brick narrated it.)

The ending was worth the read!
Revisado: 08-22-24
3.5 stars! The book was slow and frustrating until it neared its end. Also, it took such a huge leap from the previous book to this one that it left me wishing I could read a recap of the previous ones to figure things out. Still, the leap is like 10 years, so it’s a bit confusing trying to catch up and make sense of things. However, the ending was quite good. It definitely left me curious to read the next installment in this series.

Historia
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

Disappointing; not entertaining or engaging.
Revisado: 03-01-24
This book is a back and forth, jumbled, hot mess that glorifies bullying and mocking mental illness.
I found myself just wanting to hurry and be done with it around Act IV. Still, it was okay (not great) until Act V. Then all hope for any redemption toward a decent story with a cohesive plot and through line was booted out the window.
I’m disappointed and still partially confused about what the heck I just read.
