No one narrates Noir quite like Johnny Heller! This takes a surprising twist though and doesn’t just follow the same old tropes. The fantastic internal dialogue Douglas Wynne wrote was carried to perfection by Heller. Such a good listen!

I devoured this book!
Revisado: 07-11-19
I couldn't stop listening, I had to know what was coming next!
This was my second time delving into the mind of Ambrose Ibsen, and I think I need to look into a time share there! His stories seem to have that quality of "This would be terrifying if it were happening to me!" vibe. Yet the hints of humor and resolve that come from the MC, allows me to enjoy the book without thinking I need to bathe in holy water, and seek a wizard out to cast a spell of protection around my bed at night!
It has the air of the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz, and I feel like this series by Ambrose will be a perfect replacement for me. I want more of Harlan's reluctant heroics and need to solve the case even though it takes him places he'd rather not go.
Kyle Tait did a brilliant job! His performance as Ulrich made the character feel completely real; it was like he was able to embody this guy who has seen things beyond what the normal psyche could process, and managed to hold it together with a rarified acceptance that would seem unbelievable were it not for Kyle's incredible skill as a narrator.
I loved it!!

A beautiful story of redemption!!!
Revisado: 10-07-18
This is my first foray into historical fiction, and I doubt there could have been a better introduction for me! The tapestry woven in this narrative is simply wonderful!
There’s something about the way Melanie Dobson told a story out of the past entwined with people seeking it out in the present that made me feel like I was there breathing the same air as these characters at every moment.
I think though, a large part of that intimacy with this story comes from the incredible performance of Nancy Peterson. Her voice draws you in - gently captivating your heart - making you feel these characters are very much real. I also cant get over her skill with these accents!
I loved everything about this tale, and binged the last 4.5 hours straight; desperate to know what happens. I wasn’t disappointed!!!

College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

Great start to what looks to be a brilliant series!
Revisado: 07-10-18
I’ll be honest... I’m a total chicken when it comes to ghosts and possessions. But on the recommendation of a good friend I was willing to check this story out.
I’m so glad I did! The material was handled in such a way that all of the spooky elements were there, and you felt a real danger for the characters, but I’m not going to be up with nightmares for the next 3 weeks. I was intrigued, and wanted to know who and how the person was making phone calls, and then as “the plot thickened” (as they say) and I found out the who and hinted at how, I had more questions and wanted to know more about what was happening.
Great pacing, and well timed reveals, meant that I wasn’t drudging through hours of questions with a sudden and abrupt revelatory ending; neither were all the answers dumped into my lap with so much for shadowing that I had it all figured out, and was suck waiting for the characters to catch up (I hate that).
I was given information and revelations at a delectable rate - allowed to enjoy each morsel before moving on to the next with the sumptuous speed of a fine dining, 7 course meal.
Joe Hempel did a brilliant job of conveying the MCs skeptical reluctance - his irritation with being dragged into something that seemed “a total waste of time”, but he - believably - started to wonder what the hell was happening as the inexplainable continued around him.
Joe’s cadence and measured pace kept time with the tone of the story with the perfect precision of a metronome! He neither rushed nor dragged the plot along with his narration.
I believe a large part of my ability to make it through this book was due to ‘having Joe with me’ throughout the winding plot, it’s strangely comforting to feel a trust in the voice that at points is scaring you...
I have to thank them both for opening the door to this genre for me so that I can tentatively step in and experience something I never would have been willing to before now!

Put your dice and paper away. Turn off that computer. Blades of Verchinor, the most popular fantasy role-playing game of all time, is now the world’s first fully immersive virtual reality game! Okay, maybe there are a few glitches and bugs. Perhaps the NPC’s and monsters aren’t behaving exactly as expected. And sure, the creator who can fix issues such as these is missing, but this shouldn’t worry you. Life’s an adventure, right? Step through the portal and enter a new reality.

Terry Schott does it again!!
Revisado: 07-10-18
Terry has a way of bringing such an incredible sense of realism to the concept of Virtual Reality! There are these moments in his writing where he brings up some challenge or issue with what would happen if VR was to truly hit our society and it’s makes me go, “Wow! Yeah that would totally happen!” This has both excited me and scared me with what it reveals about the implications.
The story it’s self is fun and entertaining, with a great cast of characters, I love the humour and humanity he bring to each individual.
I like how this book has a definite concussion, that’s very satisfying, but also leaves enough upon that you hope he writes more stories set in this world.
I felt like Chris really hit his stride in book 2 his voice for the imp was spot on, and possibly my favourite.
If you’re a gamer you’ll want to grab this book! And if you’re not, but wondering what all the fuss is about, I can’t think of a better introduction!

Revisado: 10-15-17
I was hooked on the concept presented in the first book; amazed at the interweaving of real world reality, and this fictional premise (or is it?).
I physically read the first book, and then choose to try the audiobook for the second.
This is my first encounter with Luke Daniels... I am now officially a huge fan! His scope and range of character voices is nothing short of amazing!
I can’t wait to continue listening to this phenomenal story unfold!!!

I’m hooked!
Revisado: 10-11-17
I didn’t know anything about this series before starting this prequel. (I like it better when I’m surprised by how the story unfolds). So far this story is unfolding is like I’m unwrapping a birthday present; it’s exciting and I don’t know what it’s going to be!
The premise is great! There’s the Apocalyptic feel, yet we’re not wading through zombies. I’m fascinated by stories that ask the question, what would people do if civilization as we know it collapsed?
I thought the narrator did a great job telling this story, and I liked how he made the secondary, and even the minor characters seem as real as the protagonists.
I’m definitely going to continue this series! I can’t wait to find out what happens with Simon and Judith!

What a fantastic debut by both author and narrator!
Revisado: 06-14-17
The story written by Steven McCullough, is filled with tried and true tropes, that always make me what to know more about the world the story is set in, yet Steven has managed to skirt the edge of becoming cliché, weaving an imaginative tale. A small disappointment is that it seemed a bit rushed in areas, but perhaps that is because I have grown accustomed to epic fantasies. His main character does seem to be a bit too trusting and accepting of people and his unusual situation, though I could very easily see that as an aspect of his character, that could help, and hinder him as the series continues. Which I very much hope it does! I'm eager to find out what happens next! A sign of great writing!
I have to admit that I was shocked to listen to the quality of Henry's narrative! Knowing that this was his first published title as a narrator, I wasn't expecting the smooth cadence, and wonderful timing in his performance! From the start he set a great pace, and his warm and rich tone lent to easy listening. I was impressed with the broad range of characters, and accents he gave in his performance. He really went for it, and made it look easy!
I will definitely be following the career of both Steven and Henry with avid interest!
