Historia
In May 2016, Fort McMurray, the hub of Canada’s oil industry and America’s biggest foreign supplier, was overrun by wildfire. The multi-billion-dollar disaster melted vehicles, turned entire neighborhoods into firebombs, and drove 88,000 people from their homes in a single afternoon. Through the lens of this apocalyptic conflagration—the wildfire equivalent of Hurricane Katrina—John Vaillant warns that this was not a unique event, but a shocking preview of what we must prepare for in a hotter, more flammable world.

Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 02-16-24
Read this because recommended by PBS Newshour or NpR best pick of 2023. Narrative voices varied, plot mysterious and fractured. I did think some of the writing was pretty prose but overall it’s not a compelling story, seems more of a contrived way of telling a moral tale with overly dramatic acting. If it lasts beyond the next year or so then I would be surprised.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Uncomfortable history but important to know
Revisado: 10-15-19
The early history of Ohio is horrible and heroic. The story of our frontier busting forefathers is important to know, but the gory details and the knowledge of the terrible sacrifices that were made to settle the west are hard to read. I had to skip parts that were too painful. Instructive rather than entertaining.

good way to learn about Morocco
Revisado: 10-15-19
This is a good novel that includes a diverse representation of society through its characters, a rich depth of information about life and politics in Morocco in a modern historical setting. Its not great literature, but a very compelling story that carries you through to a dramatic finish. Since I speak french and I lived in Algeria for a year, the language, names and the combinations of Arab and french vocabulary were not that hard for me to follow, but I find it very disappointing that the reader had such terrible french pronunciation and her fake accents for the various voices was really annoying. I would recommend a different reader.

Amazing saga of family survival
Revisado: 09-01-17
Where does We Were the Lucky Ones rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Wonderful story and a vivid recreation of a horrible historical event. In my view not well served by poor choice of narrator, the bits of French used in the text were not spoken with correct pronunciation, if they were going to try to do an accent then why not use a native? It was not written by a Polish francophone so why try to fake it?
What was one of the most memorable moments of We Were the Lucky Ones?
The Siberian work camp, for one.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Survival of a family against all the odds
Any additional comments?
Good work, amazing story of endurance and love

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.
