Historia
We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

Cutting Edge Ideas
Revisado: 05-19-24
This book was a wealth of well organized information. Dr Palmer did a great job taking complex medical information and presenting it in a way that is understandable at anyone. He drew parallels and gave examples to illustrate his points and deliver this huge overwhelming topic into bite sized, easy to chew pieces. I highly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from, knows someone who suffers from or treats mental health disorders.
Now, the material is still dry and academic so don't expect to sit down and marathon your listening. I took my time with this book. I listened for short periods of time, sometimes not even an entire chapter. I didn't listen to it daily either. However. this book is a valuable resource.
And when I say mental health disorders I don't just mean depression, bipolar, ADHD. This includes dementia, seizure disorder, insomnia. Dr Palmer even skillfully weaves in diabetes, hear disease, IBS and how it is all connected. If you have diabetes you are at higher risk for alzeheimer's down the line. I tell you this is a fascinating book!

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Oh my, this book is incredible!
Revisado: 05-27-23
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a well written literary experience, anyone who appreciates the nuances of a talented narrator or anyone who likes WW2 era. I happen to fall into all 3 categories so I triple enjoyed this book. The characters were so believable in their strengths, weaknesses, external and internal dialogs. I laughed out loud several times and cried a couole times too. The author has a beautifully unique descriprive style. This book held me fast from the beginning to the end and left me wanting more. I am going to look for works by both author and narrator.

Great author, Poor narrator
Revisado: 02-10-23
I loved this author's first book so very much I listened to this one despite the reviews about the narration. I rhought I could get past the narration as the book I listened to immediately prior to this one had the 2 worst narrators I've ever in life suffered to hear. So I figured this would be an improvement. And it was but still so very disappointing. I'm starting to wonder what is going on with Audible that finding quality narrators is so hard. If this book had a different narrator it would be a 5 star review. The problem was the narrator was American. The characters were English and Indian. However, the narrator only spoke with the appropriate accents if the line was in quotations. So any silent dialog the characters had to themselves were read as American. That's like me, an American, speaking like I normally do but then thinking with a Jamaican accent....like, it's ridiculous. It was just sp distracting that it took away from the writing. Balli Kaur Jaswal deserves better. I still recommend this book but maybe is written form. The story is heartwarming and illustrates the bond between sisters even when they think they don't like each other. I had several times I chucked aloud. I could see this being made into a movie.

Possible worst narration ever
Revisado: 01-14-23
At the roots of this book the storyline is decent. However, I think another author would have done a better job. If I had read instead of listened to this book I may have given it 2 stars instead of 1. Neither narrator was any good in my opinion. The female narrator tried so overly hard to put emotion into her performance but it felt like trying too hard. Unfortunately, it seemed the only way she new how to emote was by raising the pitch of her voice so Kenna (the main female character) sounded shrill too often. She also was a ninny. (Authors fault not narrators.) The male narrator clearly was practicing to star on the next Americas Most Wanted. He sounded EXACTLY like that guy. It didn't matter what he was saying everything was presented like this..."This next criminal is wanted in 7 states for armed burglary, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He is 5ft 10 165 pounds. Last known location outside Salt Lake City. If you see this man call the 1 800 number on your screen." I almost stopped the book after his first 5 lines. Every time I'd start this book I'd feel this low level annoyance with how poor the whole thing was. But because the actual storyline (pregnant girl goes to prison, gets out , wants to meet her child) wasn't awful I suffered through the book. I think also because I just finished a very long, intense book I appreciated how mindless this one was. I will in future stay far away from either of these narrators. I will likely not bother with this author again either because there are just so many good ones out there my time can be better spent.

Historia
Poisoner, despot, necromancer - the dark legend of Catherine de Medici is centuries old. In this critically hailed biography, Leonie Frieda reclaims the story of this unjustly maligned queen to reveal a skilled ruler battling extraordinary political and personal odds - from a troubled childhood in Florence to her marriage to Henry, son of King Francis I of France; from her transformation of French culture to her fight to protect her throne and her sons' birthright. Based on thousands of private letters, it is a remarkable account of one of the most influential women to wear a crown.

Informative
Revisado: 01-06-23
This was A LOT of information. I found it fascinating but it wasn't the kind of book I could binge listen just because it was so well researched and presented. It took a long time to finish because I had to digest it slowly. I started this book after watching a few episodes of The Serpent Queen. The book is always better so now I don't want to finish the TV series because it doesn't compare. If you are wanting a historical novel that reads like a novel this may not be the book for you. At times it read like a history book and was a bit dry. I don't mind that but some might. Overall, I feel like I have a much much better picture of life in the 1500s France. I'm glad I read this book over the last couple months.

Exceptional all the way around!
Revisado: 09-24-22
I can not even emphasize how much I enjoyed this book! The narration was perfectly performed. So much so I will seek out other books narrated by him. The writing was excellent, funny, touching and from my understanding quite historically accurate. If I could give this book 20 stars I would do so. It truly is in a class of it's own. If you don't consider yourself a big Mark Twain fan this book is still for you. I didn't really consider myself a Mark Twain reader, I mean he was fine but I wasn't seeking out his books. However, this book was so much better than I thought it would be. I am sad it's over. I want more.

There is no easy path for a woman aspiring to power. A concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the emperor's attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. But young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the emperor a gift he can never forget.

The best thing about this book is
Revisado: 02-28-22
that it introduced me to an interesting character. To have been the 1st and only female to rule in her own right in China she must have been incredible. Intelligent, charismatic, strong...
However, this book portrayed her as a jealous, eavesdropping twit. The entire thing felt forced from the writing to the narration. The author seemed to attempt poetry. It got more annoying as the book went on. The following are some examples.
Her bloody hair twisted around her face like tangled river vines.
I clung to him like a cicada clings to it's leafy nest.
Fear swept through the hall faster than a pack of hungry rats.
The skin on the right side of his face sagged like wrinkled calligraphy paper taped to his skin.
Seriously people, I can't make this up. And it seemed as if EVERY OTHER SENTENCE was bla bla bla like a bla bla bla. It wore me down like a forgotten sand castle slowly washing away in high tide. (See what I did there?) Can you imagine if I wrote my entire review like that? Can you imagine reading an entire book like that? I only finished it because I was out of credits so was waiting to order another book until I get my new credit.
The narrative was one of the worst. I agree with previous reviews that she sounded hysterical. She read the main character as normal or high pitched hysteria. Was the character frightened? Read hysteria. Was the character concerned? Read hysteria. Was the character angry? Read hysteria louder. Every one of the female characters save one came across as mean, clicky, trifling middle school girls.
I rarely write lengthy reviews but this book was such an atrocity I hope I save someone else from wasting their time. Pick another book my friends.

Just amazing
Revisado: 11-08-20
I think everyone should read this book. Although it goes against almost everything we have been taught Dr Saladino backs up his recommendations with biology and science. At times this book became very technical and I would be unable to relate it to others as he does. I will settle for explaining it in a more layman's way.
I am about 2 weeks into my own carnivore experiment and I feel incredible. This is coming from a woman who was vegetarian for 12 years, 3 of those years I was strict vegan. I love vegetables but admit I feel better without them in my diet. I have more energy than I've had for years. I'm making insane strength gains in the gym. I poop more than every 3-4 days now. I have less food cravings.
This book is a life changing kind of book. Please read it, try your own carnivore experiment. Then tell all your friends and family the good news.

In When Christ and His Saints Slept, the first of a trilogy that will tell the story of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, master storyteller and historian Sharon Kay Penman illuminates one of the less known but fascinating periods of English history. It begins with the death of King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror and father of Maude, his only living legitimate offspring.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 09-14-19
This is one of the most remarkable, compelling books I've ever experienced. The author is a thorough historian and masterful weaver of tales. It's the story of 12th century England during the years Stephen and Maude's bloody civil war. The book spans decades and takes us to England, Normandy, France and Whales. The narrator was perfect in her portrayal of the characters. Read this book. You will not regret it.
There is a sequel that is not audiobook available yet and I'm truly disheartened because I was to dive into more. I need Time and Chance to be an audiobook STAT.

I had never heard of Ken Follett until recently when a friend recommended this book. I loved it so much. The author does a spectacular job writing, creating anticipation over and over. There were times I was so anxious to know what was going to happen at a particular point I wished the narrator would read faster. Speaking of the narration, this book is the best narrated audio book I've ever listened to. Ever!
