Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

absolutely fantastic
Revisado: 10-01-24
as a lover of trees and nature and rewilding, I was sucked in on multiple levels. the story is riveting and the performance was really good. my only quibble was with the pronunciation and accents for the Indian characters. I'm gujarati and it was jarring. other than that, fantastic. I wish there was more!

Historia
In the summer of 1938, botanists Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter set off to run the Colorado River, accompanied by an ambitious and entrepreneurial expedition leader, a zoologist, and two amateur boatmen. With its churning waters and treacherous boulders, the Colorado was famed as the most dangerous river in the world. Journalists and veteran river runners boldly proclaimed that the motley crew would never make it out alive. But for Clover and Jotter, the expedition held a tantalizing appeal: no one had yet surveyed the plant life of the Grand Canyon, and they were determined to be the first.

awful narration!
Revisado: 04-24-24
this kind of story is normally right up my alley, but the narration is so bad I could not finish it. She reads it with a 1940s mid Atlantic type of accent, and then when there are first person accounts, she dials up the accent to whole new heights of over acting. it honestly sounds like she is mocking these scientists and I'm not into that. I don't recommend the audio book at all. as for the story, it has so much potential but it is not particularly well written so I would not even recommend getting the physical book.

As the American-born daughter of immigrants, Dr. Sunita Puri knew from a young age that the gulf between her parents' experiences and her own was impossible to bridge, save for two elements: medicine and spirituality. Interweaving evocative stories of Puri's family and the patients she cares for, That Good Night is a stunning meditation on impermanence and the role of medicine in helping us to live and die well, arming listeners with information that will transform how we communicate with our doctors about what matters most to us.

Revisado: 07-31-21
I have been a fan of Elizabeth's for several years. this book moved me, touched my soul, made me feel seen, inspired me to do more activism. and what a great performance too. Read with heartfelt emotion that was also very soothing to listen to. I'm about to restart it because everything in it bears repeating. thank you for this gem, Elizabeth!

Frustrating and distracting, the confused accents!
Revisado: 12-28-16
I'm a huge Wodehouse fan, but it is torture listening to this narration. B. J. Harrison can't seem to make up his mind about the accents, and his Jeeves is a flat, monotonous attempt at copying Stephen Fry's Jeeves from the t.v. series with Hugh Laurie.
I find myself so distracted by the ever changing accents, especially the random American pronunciations that keep appearing, that I can't focus on the stories. I am not sure I'll be able to stomach fifteen hours of this.
Don't waste your credits or your time with this one!

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Historia
Every schoolchild learns about the mutually beneficial dance of honeybees and flowers: The bee collects nectar and pollen to make honey and, in the process, spreads the flowers' genes far and wide. In The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan ingeniously demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a similarly reciprocal relationship.

Great book ruined by unimaginably awful reading
Revisado: 09-16-11
It is difficult to say I enjoyed this book when I could barely stomach the awful narration by Scott Brick. I think having him narrate this (as well as all the other Michael Pollan books) is a huge disservice to MP fans. I think having my eyes poked out would be preferable to listening to another book by this reader, even if it were my most favourite book ever.
The sing-songy and overly dramatic (in random places that have nothing to do with the storyline) reading completely take away any pleasure to be gained from Michael Pollan's clear, insightful writing. I actually had to abandon the book after the second section because I just couldn't take it any longer. I feel cheated - of my time, of my money, and of what could have been a wonderful listening experience. Audible.com should have a free short listening sample from each book so you can make sure the narrator is not going to ruin it for you before you spend your money on the whole book!
If you can tolerate his nasal, whiny narration, go for it - the material is fantastic, and everything one would expect from Michael Pollan.
