Outstanding debut crime novel
Revisado: 10-29-23
As good a debut novel as there’s been in the last decade. Up there with John Vercher, Stephen Mack Jones & David Swinson’s debuts. The story rattles along, the characterisation is very good, the dialogue excellent and the descriptions bring it all to life. Narration does the writing justice. Highly recommended.

In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the projects of “Southie,” the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to tradition and stands proudly apart. Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched.

Classic Lehane
Revisado: 05-21-23
As good as anything Lehane has written. His strength is his characters and in Mary Pat he’s written one of his best. A mystery and a tragic revenge thriller set against the backdrop of school busing in 1970’s Boston. It never takes the easy approach and like the best of Lehane it makes you think and feel. A must listen.

Historia
In House Revenge, congressional fixer Joe DeMarco is dispatched to Congressman John Mahoney's hometown of Boston. Mahoney wants him to help Elinore Dobbs, an elderly woman fighting against a real estate developer intent on tearing down her apartment building for a massive new development. Mahoney is in it just for the free press until Sean Callahan, the developer, disrespects him, and Elinore suffers a horrible "accident", likely at the hands of two thugs on Callahan's payroll.

A very enjoyable entry into Mike Lawson's Joe Demarco series. There are lots of twists and turns in this one and a great ending. Excellently read by Joe Barrett. Highly recommended.

Historia
It's 1998, and for years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved, its secrets only speculated on by the outside world. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold Cleveland's largest bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost.

Starts well, gets stuck in the middle and doesn't recover
Revisado: 02-18-16
Not sure how this won Amazon's breakout thriller award. The novel is a mess, it has two narrative threads which cover a lot of the same events. The story gets stuck in the middle and drags on until the end. I think you could have cut out the Iris Latch (I kid you not) narrative and gained a lot of narrative drive. Maxine was most probably the most interesting character. The story may have worked better if the second narrative was actually from Maxine's brother the police detective. There was a good story in there but it never got out.
