Shockingly simple and boring and just not interesting
Revisado: 02-25-24
First book I have attempted to read by this author and the first time I have actually returned a book to Audible. The author had rave reviews but wow was this book uninteresting and whiny. The teenager is whiny, the wife is whiny, the characters are poorly developed and shallow. The dialog is trite. Whatever great surprise reveal happens at the end of many of this authors books I could get through the story to get to. This is definitely a skip.

Such an entertaining thriller!

What a captivating and fun listen. The non linear story telling was a utilized to perfection to keep you interested and guessing. I got much less sleep than I should have this week listening way too late into the evening. Highly recommend to anyone who loved Alias and always wonders if they would be even half as good at lying.

Historia
Kat Grant and Alice Campbell have a friendship forged in shared confidences and long lunches lubricated by expensive wine. Though they're very different women - the artsy socialite and the struggling suburbanite - they're each other's rocks. But even rocks crumble under pressure. Like when Kat's financier husband, Howard, plunges to his death from the second-floor balcony of their South Florida mansion. Howard was a jerk, a drunk, a bully, and, police say, a murder victim. The questions begin piling up.

Not bad but not great.
Revisado: 07-10-22
The narrator was good. The novel itself mediocre. I certainly was hoping for a bit more intrigue.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Men writing girls at it's worst
Revisado: 02-18-21
I really wanted to like this and thought it would be interesting to see how it influenced the genre 30 years ago. Disclaimer, I've gone off the sci-fi genre in recent years because so much of it I feel I've heard before.
The way the author writes a 15 year old girl is cringeworthy. I literally guffawed (that's not a term I've used in many years) at the dialogue she was given. I can suspend belief for many unexplained futuristic concepts, but I can't deal with terrible character development.
There were some very interesting concepts for the time, but the exposition that took up half the book was tedious. Narration is what keeps me listening, I would have put down the book 50 pages in.

Historia
Laura Kinsale presents a second novel by talented new author Elizabeth Kingston. Fair, Bright, and Terrible is the riveting companion to The King's Man. Wales is conquered, and Eluned has lost everything: her country, her husband, her hope. All that remains is vengeance, and she will stop at nothing to have it. When Robert de Lascaux is asked to marry the woman he has loved for eighteen years, he never hesitates. No wealth has ever mattered to him as much as Eluned has.

If you loved King's Man this is a fabulous companion
Revisado: 08-10-17
I was so sad to have the King's Man end and I was thrilled that there was a companion to that story. This book expands on the time period while also reminding us that well written characters are not one dimensional.
I am a huge fan of well written intelligent historical romance and Elizabeth Kingston fits that bill where few others do. I love her strong female characters and the men that fall in love with them. I hope she continues to write such captivating novels as her career continues.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-16-17
Having recently started listening to this genre, I can't say I have a breadth of novels to compare this to. The story line is slow paced , the romance scenes bland and uninteresting and the character development rather bland as well. Having started with Diana Gabaldon, and JD Robb ( aka Nora Roberts ) this is a terrible disappointment as this author had many good reviews. Supposedly her historical fiction is better however the writing was repetitive can't imagine a better plot line would make up for the full writing.
