Terrific Series!
Revisado: 08-31-23
I absolutely love this series -- the characters, the town, the plots and the narration. I can honestly say these books are among my favorites in my collection of over 2,000 audio books, which includes just about every legal thriller out there. I've practiced law for over 40 years, and can say these books are are true-to-life descriptions of legal procedures, issues and strategies. But that is only one of the many reasons I enjoy them. Stagg is a gifted writer, a keen observer of human nature, and has enough sense to stick to the modest but laudable goal of just writing good stories! Every one a winner -- and in my humble opinion, this one is the best so far.

Good But Not Great
Revisado: 04-07-23
I'm a big Dugoni fan, but found this one a bit underwhelming. Partly the narration, which was so-so. But I also found the story to be somewhat cliched, and lacking in some of the character development that make Dugoni novels so good. I'm not that big on twists and turns, especially when they seem a bit contrived as the do here.I don't regret listening, but he can do much better!
SPOILER ALERT: Being a lawyer myself, I was also rather dismayed by the idea that a court would uphold a prenuptial agreement which provides that any affair would result in a sacrifice of all property earned during the marriage, including property arising from the offending party's business. Wouldn't happen.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Well Worth a Credit!
Revisado: 02-27-23
This one got off to a bit of a slow start for me -- sufficiently so, that I considered returning it. But once the somewhat long list of characters were introduced, it really started rolling, and I found myself wondering why I had thought about returning it. Because it was described by someone as "women's literature," whatever that is? Sometimes I'm just not sufficiently willing to explore new authors, and this book reminded me that I miss out on lots of good books as a result. The writing is excellent throughout, and the narration superb.

Revisado: 11-04-22
I have no' idea what the harsh critics are talking about! I've been a Reacher fan from the beginning, and can say with confidence that the plot, the writing, the characterization and narration are right in line with the ones that made me first love the guy. Is it the best Reacher ever? No, probably not. But it certainly isn't the worst, or anywhere near it. Just a solid, fun adventure. Is anything missing? Well, it could maybe use a bit more math. . .

Ten years ago, legendary author Riley Cannon produced three of the best-selling thriller novels of all-time. Then, she vanished, leaving the final three books of the saga unfinished and producing the biggest mystery in the history of publishing. Now, a decade later, there is word from her mega-agent, the glamorous and powerful Topaz Kennedy, that a new Cannon novel is all-but-finished. But, Topaz knows the truth: Riley Cannon hasn’t even started the book. With the clock counting down to the publication date, desperate measures are needed.

Started Kinda Slow, and Then I Was Hooked!
Revisado: 08-09-22
I sometimes struggle with lots of characters at the start of a book, and that was my reaction to this one for awhile. And then, at a point I cannot quite define, I found myself totally immersed in the world of the book. Some authors seem to lose momentum towards the end of a book. My experience with LB is quite the opposite. Having listened to all of his books on Audible, I've learned not to doubt whether his book will become one that captivates, and will remain in my thoughts long after it ends. An unusual writer with an unusual style that works in unusual ways.

Historia
By the time playwright and actor Shawn Frost had won two Tony Awards by his late 20s, he was seen as a theater prodigy—a meteoric rise that the performing arts community had not witnessed in almost a hundred years. His work? Shakespearean in scope, character, and popularity—boundless and beautiful. His own character? Flawed. And in a place like New York City, where failings get magnified, Shawn Frost finds that, even from the heights of artistic sublimity, no one is insulated from the demons that have caused the best of entertainers to fall from grace.

This one is Very Special!
Revisado: 08-07-22
I've purchased and listened to 1,700 audio books, and this one is among the top 5. It is at times creepy, funny, thought-provoking, and always engaging. LB is truly a fresh new talent, or at least new to me. I have all of his audio books, and each one has left me thinking about the characters and the settings long after I finished listening. Treat yourself and explore them!
Scott Brick is, of course, the perfect narrator for the book, and I gather a friend of the author. I'm looking forward to more of their collaborations.

Eventually, she gets some support from the families of the other followers. Adding to her problems, the person she connects with the most is the leader’s son. She figures that's the worst of it, until the rest of the group is found dead, and her dad is charged with 11 counts of first-degree murder and arson.

Interesting Plot but a Flawed Effort
Revisado: 07-29-22
I got this book because I enjoyed Painting the Lake. Although I like the basic plot idea in this one, and again enjoyed the author's straightforward style and character development, there are some flaws that are hard to ignore. Spoiler alert: I try not to give away too much, but if you haven't finished the book you might not want to read on....
Although I'm a lawyer, I do not expect books with legal proceedings to be totally accurate, but the effort here is pretty far off the mark. Most of the trial testimony consisted of improper questions, opinions by non-experts about what they think happened, and what most readers would recognize as inadmissible hearsay.
More generally, the conclusion revolved around some surprise testimony that could not possibly have been anticipated, which in my world isn't quite fair in a thriller. The narration was just so-so.
Still, even with the flaws, I found the book fun, because of the writer's strengths.

Ellis Takes a Wrong Turn
Revisado: 07-15-22
David Ellis is a gifted writer, and I've enjoyed a number of his books, but this one just did nothing for me. I'm a third of the way through it, and not much interested in finishing. Unsympathetic characters, bizarre plot lines.

It Isn't Terrible. . . .
Revisado: 03-17-22
But neither is it especially good. I'm okay with stories that aren't especially believable, provided the characters are consistent and interesting, and the writing is good. But the writing is just mediocre, and the characters appear to exist solely to support the preposterous plot.
So why three stars and not less? Basically, because Clines has a good imagination and I really liked '14.'

Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Ignore the Negative Reviews -- It's Great!
Revisado: 11-18-21
The people complaining about Covid, masks and vaccinations must have REALLY strong anti-vacc political views or something. There are a few references . . .to events that have been a HUGE part of the lives of every person on Earth for the last couple years. Get over it.
As always, the story and writing are unpretentious and thoroughly engaging, Narration is top-notch, too.
Bothered that the story is more about Ballard than Bosch? Get over that too! Writers and stories evolve. Connelly's books are engaging because they do more than just serve up the same meal over and over again. Connelly writes like a former crime reporter who knows his subjects. Because he is.
