Want to exercise your intellectual muscle, by synthesizing the future through a comprehensive review of the past? This is an excellent primer. Dr. Schaeffer’s integration of events across time has made the present much more understandable, and future possibilities conceivable. Well done.

Thank you, Dr. Schaeffer, for articulating scripture in in very real terms for the saints of today.

I keep trying to like C.S. Lewis but with the exception of The Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Gives A Toast I have been unsuccessful.
I won’t take the time to describe my concerns because I believe my dissatisfaction is due to my own preferences. I’m writing this in case there are others who feel similarly, but don’t know why.

A timely book for this anti-intellectual age of emotionalism and elitism. A wonderful call for the return to what used to be called “common sense”.

I’ve been preparing a seminar for the rediscovering of manhood, in a masculine-hating culture, and saw this title. This book was the very epitome of that which I am attempting to overcome. The narration was immature, with little depth of understanding of manhood. Mr. Tome does not have a calm voice of assurance that makes one think he is an experienced practitioner of manhood, but rather a young, hip academic perpetuating the existing cultural maladies that are weakening true manhood. He was very hard for me to listen to. Though occasionally some good points were made, I found myself unable to listen for another 2 hours. I wanted to enjoy this book, but it just wasn’t for me.

Matt does a great job identifying the areas where many professing Christians remain, unknowingly, in the dark. This is a very honest look at what Christianity has become and Matt knows that he will be criticized vociferously for saying so. That’s courageous.
I agree with almost all of his premises, but disagree with many of his conclusions. I suspect from the language of the book that Matt does not have a reformed theology, yet, but remains in an Arminian mind set. He says that he wearied himself in the world so he sought after God. He writes that God sets 2 doors before you and you must choose salvation or hell.
This Arminian mind set has led him to disagree with scripture in a few areas. With that said, it isn’t his conclusions that make for a good read, for you can draw your own from the oodles of information he has provided, but his courageous stand against what he characterizes as cowardice in the church. We very well may be suffering from a dearth of courage, especially among the men in the pews, and in the churches leadership, but there is one man who has not sat Idly folding his hands.
I knew of Matt as a social commentator, and now I know him as a man of God who challenges other men not to participate in a Church of Cowards.

I was truly pleased by the research, and balance of the book through the first half of the book. It offered contrary points of explication for the observations it made and left me to draw my own conclusions. Well done.
Then the last half became a one dimensional, man focused diatribe without almost any regard for scripture to be found.
This book is well worth the read, but only if you are capable of not being led by the nose, away from the scriptures, because of the constant name drops of popular (yet mediocre) preachers and authors.
Whenever you’re told what you must do to bring men back to the church, ask two questions:
First, is this the God ordained purpose for men in the church? Second, what is the Biblical precept, principle, or picture for the recommendation being made?

Thought provoking for sure, but don’t ignore scriptural discernment.
