Historia
The Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was also about ideas, in the broadest sense - economic and political, artistic and personal. In The Free World, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar and critic Louis Menand tells the story of American culture in the pivotal years from the end of World War II to Vietnam and shows how changing economic, technological, and social forces put their mark on creations of the mind.

Too many errors by the reader!
Revisado: 11-29-21
Please. Get a director for books like this. I am a big fan of Louis Menand and was looking forward to this. But how can you hire an actor who has no idea how to say words like "Alfred Kazin," "Hannah Arendt," "ideology," and "premises"?
And craziest of all, how could someone think John Cage's most famous piece (4'33") is called "Four Feet, Thirty-Three Inches"?
Please. This is embarrassing for the Audible company.

In this definitive biography of one of Hollywood's most beloved stars, Michael Munn reveals the truth behind the diffident, earnest and kindly persona of Jimmy Stewart. Drawn from the author's formal interviews and informal meetings with the star and his friendship with Stewart's wife, Gloria, is this portrait of a man who came from the Presbyterian traditions of Pennsylvania to become one of the silver screen's enduring legends.

Strange choice of narrators
Revisado: 10-01-21
The actor reading this story of Jimmy Stewart is either so young or so out of touch that he has no idea how to pronounce Marlene Dietrich’s or Bette Davis‘s names. That seems very odd. Why was there no director to correct things like that?

Terrific narrator

Will Patton sounds exactly the way I imagine Charles Bukowski to sound. Excellent reading, no overacting; he makes this a great event.

Bad reader
Revisado: 06-10-21
The reader of this audiobook seems unfamiliar with very ordinary English words. That includes the names of colleges, and the names of some very famous comedians. It's so easy to find out how to pronounce people's names and other words; why not check?

The grass isn't greener on the other side: Heiresses have always been viewed with eyes of envy. They were the ones for whom the cornucopia had been upended, showering them with unimaginable wealth and opportunity. However, through intimate historical biographies, Women of Means shows us that oftentimes the weaving sisters saved their most heart-wrenching tapestries for the destinies of wealthy women. Women of Means is bound to be a non-fiction best seller, full of the best biographies of all time.

Mediocre book; worse narrator
Revisado: 01-26-21
Some words this reader should have looked up pronunciations for: wastrel, couture, Laotian, uxorious, portentous. And who hasn't heard of Madison Square Garden? She called it "Gardens." Where is she from?
Also, what did she bring such a horribly sarcastic tone to this? If the reader hates the book so much, why read it?
A very disappointing experience overall.

Stories Amazing; Readers Worthy of the Material
Revisado: 06-10-13
Any additional comments?
This was possibly the best audiobook experience I've ever had with fiction. Each of the readers did a wonderful job with voices and with the "voice" of these stories, which are among the greatest (and funniest) in the American canon. As soon as I finished, I started over at the beginning and started listening to the first stories again.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Fascinating and engaging true story from American history.
Which character – as performed by Jeff Cummings – was your favorite?
He read it all so well I did not even think about his technique.
